Seem to be cought by a worm. Already found out that new file outlook.exe has been created in WINNT/System32. Searched Symantec database and found something like WORM_MIMAIL.Q Purpose seems indeed to send random mails. However, none of the other featured discribed with MIMAIL seem to be present. Norton antivirus hangs on startup. Housecall on line scan found nothing. Grisoft ( ran it after booting from another HD ) nothing. Panda found W32/Sdbot.gen.worm in files outlook.exe and outlook.dat, and removed them, but they keep coming back after rebooting. According to the file properties of ..system32/outlook.exe I must have got it whilst getting the Windows security updates ( For some reason I had to switch off Teatimer and firewall in order to have them downloaded and installed ) Anyone who can help me ?
Here it is. The BHO (no name) seems to be the only "new" thing.

You should disable "TeaTimer.exe" via the task manger before attempting this fix.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Scan".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IEUpdate] ieupdate.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [IEUpdate] ieupdate.exe

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

ieupdate.exe <— file
(use windows explorer to find)

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
I'll try to get this done asap, but how the hell can I get my mouse working in safe mode ? Seems I have to do all with the keyboard, and that is NOT easy ( very old logitec mouse on parallel port )
Done as suggested with HT fix, but cannot find ieupdate.exe ( tried explorer, search and winfile ) so it's hard to delete. Wait and see what happens ?
Oh dear !
Rebooted ( took minutes before pîctograms appeared ).
Still can't find ieupdate.exe but the BHO no name is back !

By the way : is it normal for explorer to run permanently ? It refuses often to close when I shut down.
And cidaemon.exe twice ?
Don't worry about that O2 that comes back.

And I wouldn't worry about cidaemon either.

is it normal for explorer to run permanently ?

Windows explorer - yes

Internet Explorer - no

Everything looks good to me.
I'm just glad we cold help.

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
