I had an awful Trojan about a month ago - anyway decided to reload windows xp and i am sure i had overwritten the previous version.

I have also transfered all my music and pictures to my external hard drive to save space.

However when i look at properties on my 'c' drive it shows that approx 17gb have been used and there are only 3 left.

I have not that many programs on my pc - is this normal - does xp take up so much room?

If anybody can advise!

I have attached a HJT log for information.

What I suspect you did was either a Parallel install, along side the existing XP installation or a Repair Install which overlays the existing installation.

If you look at C:, is there a C:\Windows and a C:\Windows???? (???? meaning some other characters)?

There is a nice little program called SequoiaView which give you a great graphical view of your hard drive, making it easy to spot where space is being used.
  • Download, install and run it.
  • Click on View then Colors and check Enable Color Scheme
Place your mouse pointer over a file to see it's full path. Right click and select Properties to see the size.

Before running SequoiaView, you should make all files and extensions visible. Do this by:
  • Control Panel / Folder Options / View Tab.
  • Select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
  • Uncheck Hide protected Operating System files [Recommended]
