Hello! I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows XP with Service Pack 2. McAfee has found problems identified as Vundo and/or W32 Trats. McAfee appears to repair or quarantine the problems, but my computer does the same thing:Desktop appears momentarily then disappears. I had popups for spyware removal software, sex buddies, and a love calculator. The popups have not been present lately. I have to access certain programs by going through Task Manager with Alt+Ctrl+Del. The system is slow booting up and running in general. Since the last McAfee scan/repair, I get a msg that windows cannot find the mljge.exe file. My first Hijackthis log is posted below. Thank you!

hi,

lets start with vundofix:

download and run vundofix.exe:

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Click the Scan for Vundo button.
* Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
The requested logs are pasted below. My desktop remained visible this time, but I still got messages that Windows could not find the mljge.exe file. Thank you for taking the time to help me with this. You are a blessing!!

i dont see a anti-malware application in the log. maybe there is one in the McAfee suite you have?
i can suggest a second one to use, keep updated and scan with sometimes. up to you really.

it is a new one:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop:

http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

hi hazlize, message gone now? hows it looking on your end? if all is good we can make new restore points. the why and the how: One of the features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed. Dont do this on a regular basis. To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account. (winXP) 1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point) On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore. Click Apply, and then click OK. 2. Reboot. 3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system) On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*. Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot i have some prevention tips at my website, link below. happy safe surfing. shelf life
Good evening, Shelf Life!! I did not have any messages when I rebooted. I followed your instructions to start new restore points, and I visited your prevention website. It was VERY informative. Your help is invaluable. Thank you for being a blessing to those of us that struggle with these issues. With kindest regards, Hazlize
