Antivirus (McAfee) disabled

Running windows xp, infected with a virus that disabled McAfee. Another screen pops-up stating machine is at risk and for virus protection follow the link. Tried to uninstall and reinstall McAfee but the application no longer shows in the add/remove programs.

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.

  • DO NOT use tools such as ComboFix without supervision.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.

Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.
  • Be sure to disable your security programs
  • Double click on the file to run it (Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt)
  • A window will open on your desktop
  • if an unknown bootcode is found you will have further options available to you, at this time press N then press Enter twice.
  • If nothing unusual is found just press Enter
  • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your desktop.
  • Please post the contents of that file.

Scan With RootKitUnHooker

  • Please choose one link and download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your desktop.

  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers and Stealth
  • Uncheck the rest. then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked and click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File > Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.

Note** you may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments,  attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

How's your computer running at the moment?


I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner
  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start.  The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button.  The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\Program Files\ESET\log.txt into your next reply.

Good Morning. I have not used the machine except for performing the steps you have requested. I was able to use IE and get to ESET from the machine. Previously I had to use another machine to download the other applications. The ESET scan did not find any viruses. Is it clean? How do I reinstall McAfee? Do you recommend MS Windows firewall or McAfee? Julie, Your computer appears to be clean. :) McAfee still doesn't show up in Add/Remove programs? And my preferred combination of antivirus/firewall is Microsoft Security Essentials and the Windows firewall. I am assuming your computer is connected to a router?

No, McAfee does not show up in add/remove programs. I tried to reinstall but it errors out and says that there are missing files and to try an re-install. I can't uninstall to reinstall. Any idea how I can uninstall it through the backdoor? Thanks.

Ugh…I've tried multiple times but I keep getting an error when running the removal tool. MSKdetctor - Unable to write to c:\documents and settings/all users.windows/applicaiton data/mcafee/spamkiller/mskdetct.dat The /spamkiller folder does not exist, nor does the mskdetct.dat file I also tried running the McAfee Virtual Technician, but it cannot detect any products. Hi Julie,

Can you be more specific about your wireless connectivity problem? What happens when you try to connect to your wireless network? Are you using the Windows wireless utility or a third party one?

It looks like McAfee was removed. There are some leftovers, so let's get rid of them as well.


Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.
