Hi araillius,

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi araillius,

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

————————————————————————

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:

BrowsingProgram
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
JavaT 6 Update 2
JavaT 6 Update 3
JavaT SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
MVMusicManager powered by AdVantage
PlayMP3z

The Java installations are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 4) from here

You have LimeWire and BearShare, P2P file sharing programs installed on your computer. These programs do not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove them, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Limewire and BearShare via Add/Remove Programs.

You also have a program called Search Settings - do you know anything about this?

————————————————————————

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):

You have 1stnb.com in your Trusted Zone. Any sites in the Trusted Zone are a security risk, so unless you need it to be there in order for the site to work then please remove it by checking this line:

O15 - Trusted Zone: https://online.1stnb.com (HKCU)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the OTMoveIt file list below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    OTMoveIt Standard List:
    C:\DOCUME~1\MARCOR~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\tem141.tmp.exe
    C:\Program Files\BrowsingProgram
    C:\Program Files\PlayMP3z
    C:\Program Files\mv
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste Standard List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Then click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

————————————————————————

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
dir "C:\Documents and Settings\Marc Orlando\Application Data\Search Settings" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
dir "C:\Program Files\Search Settings" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
dir "C:\Program Files\Common Files\SWF Studio" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
dir "C:\WINDOWS\system32\runtime" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
dir "C:\Documents and Settings\Marc Orlando\471" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
del runme.bat
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called look.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the OTMoveIt results, the look.txt output and a new HijackThis log. Also let me know if you had any trouble with the instructions.
Thank you again, Silver, for all of your help and time. Yes, your instructions were VERY clear and easy to follow–looks like you've done this before–joking–here are the three posts that you asked for ( OTMoveIt results, the look.txt output and a new HijackThis log): Also, do I need to do anything else with Spybot?

Hi araillius,

Also, do I need to do anything else with Spybot?

Not at present, we'll re-enable it once we're done cleaning.

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d…kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, let me know how your computer is behaving.
–System seems to be running ok. Haven't noticed any unwanted windows popping up…

Hi araillius,

Just one more thing to take care of:

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for Search Settings and remove it.

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Search Settings

If you have trouble finding or deleting it, please let me know in your next response.

Clean up with OTMoveIt2:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt2 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Once complete, please let me know if you had any difficulties with the instructions.
Silver, Everything went smoothly, except that I couldn't find "Search Settings" in ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, as well as the folder in C:\Program Files\Search Settings. I think that I might have already deleted it when you asked me about it back on your February 27th post. Also, can I re-enable Spybot? And can you tell me how to do it? One more question, can I remove any or all of those programs and notebook txt. files that you had me download and copy to my desktop? Last question, do you recomend me using Spybot and AVG (both being the free edition that I downloaded) to replace MacAfee Security (which I recently uninstalled)?
Hi araillius,

That's fine about Search Settings and yes we still need to re-enable Spybot:

Re-enable Spybot's TeaTimer
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Check the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

You can remove all the log files which we have made and the tools we have used.
Yes AVG AV is a good antivirus and Spybot is a good program also - I suggest you keep them, make sure you update and scan with them regularly.
Here are some further recommendations to help you keep your machine clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, one I can recommend is Comodo:

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
Thank you, Silver, for your help on my issue. Also, thank you for all of your time you committed to me, as well as your timely responses to my replies. Everything is running smoothly, and I haven't noticed anymore AD served Browsing pop-ups. I will look into all of your suggestions for added security. Thank you, again.
