I am running an IBM ThinkPad T42p with Windows XP Pro, SP2. For about 2 weeks I have been experiencing a problem with Windows Installer trying, about every 30-45 seconds, to install a "ghost" program (I think it is Roxio Media Creator 7 which I uninstalled a year or so ago). Right after that, I began getting a message when starting/restarting Windows just after the home screen comes up. The message says, "Unable to open WMI namespace. WMI initialization failed. Cannot proceed further." The label on the message box is QCWLICON, so I suspect the error has something to do with that exe file. Any idea what to do to fix this problem? Thanks.
Hello Lloyd_Landers :welcome:

Thanks for the details, it does help us out in determining the issue. The QCWLICON is the IBM Wireless Lan System Tray Icon. You can disable this by going to Start | Run, type msconfig, and press Enter. Next, go to the Startup tab. Clear the checkbox for QCWLICON and it will no longer run at startup. Click OK to close. On your next startup, you'll get a message saying “You have used System Configuration to make changes to the way Windows starts…". Select the option to not show the message next time.

As for the underlying WMI issue, this may indicate something else that needs to be fixed. Please download and run the WMI Diagnostic Utility. It will produce a log file that you can zip and attach to your next post, we can proceed from there.

Regards,

Ax
