Hi, I've been having this crazy problem that I hope someone can help me with. I uninstalled AVG several months ago because it was just slowing my computer down too much. Since that day, almost every time I click on a link in a webpage, nothing happens. I may have to click on a link 20 or 30 times to get any response at all, and often when the browser opens the new url in the window, the page is only half downloaded, like…no images or the stylesheet have loaded, just the text on the page. Lots of other weirdness too, like not being able to synch my ipod with winamp. I don't know if my internet connection is tenuous, or if in uninstalling AVG, something in my registry got screwed up. So today I reinstalled it for kicks and giggles, and wouldn't you know, for about 15 minutes, everything worked perfectly, and then…back to how it's been….click click click click click. I wonder if anyone here can help me figure out if it's something wonky, or what? Thanks for your time.

Hi! Welcome to the WTT forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Download and Run SmitfraudFix
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi

Please follow my instructions in the order I have posted

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back in your next reply.

Run Smitfraudfix
Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

If you already have Combofix, please delete that copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please download Combofix from Bleeping Computer.

If you can't download it from there, please try these 2 alternative sites:

Forospyware
Geeks to Go

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your anti-virus and any real-time anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Click Start>Run copy/paste or type "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall into the Run box and click OK.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2:Remember to re-enable your anti-virus and anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.

New HijackThis log taken after the above scan has run
Argh….I can't seem to get past your first step. I restart my computer in safe mode and then click on RunThis.bat, and type Y. The program starts, and there is a message to the effect that it's checking and scanning. It takes about 3/4 minutes, and then that window disappears and it just goes back to the main safe mode screen, and then nothing happens. No task bar, no icons, no message to reboot or anything. I get a black screen with the words Safe Mode in each of the 4 corners and nothing else. I have to use the power button to turn the computer off. I restart the computer, and nothing runs…no Fixtool. I open up the SDFix folder and there are now dozens of text files in the folder that weren't there before. I tried this several times and it never worked the way it's supposed to. What should I do next? Just go on with the rest of the directions? Is there a text file in the SDFix folder that I can show you? Again, thank you for all this time and help!
