Slow system

Emachine w/AMD running xp home sp2. The system gets very slow - gets progressively worse from reboot on - to the point it is at a standstill - and the hard drive activity is constant - as if a scan is in progress. Been through lots of scans, no malware found (see:

Ran pcpitstop check and nothing came up (other than suggestion to add memory - which I will)

System was working fine till about 2 weeks ago - no new hardware or software added..

Anything insights or help greatly appreciated.

I think I have it fixed. From the task list the only process with any activity was mcmscsvc.exe I did a google search for this and found the following post

It appears it was a problem with a (probably automatic) update of McAffee (from comcast) - nice…

Followed their fix and it seems to have worked.
