My system is older, but it had been running fine. I'm running xp pro sp2. processor: intel celeron 633mhz. memory only 320 mgs. DirectX 9. IE7. I've been using D-Link Xtreme N gigabit router DIR-655 for almost a year now. I use AVG, ad-aware2007, spybot, cwshredder and spyware blaster. All are updated weekly and ran weekly. AVG is updated daily. I downloaded AVG anti-spyware, updated and ran that. As for my system's behavior, it seems extremely slow now. I have cable broadband and my connection speed was usually around 6.5 mbps. After the computer has been on a few minutes the speed drops down to around 1mbps. I've had this broadband for over a year with no problems. When I'm in one app, another app opens by itself. This happens infrequently, but it does happen. Also saved settings to the desktop change by themselves. I've been using a logitech mx1000 cordless laser mouse for over a year and now some of the buttons stop working. I've ran the adware and spyware apps with only minor instances. I'm hoping you might find something that is eluding everyone else. Following is the avgas log as well as the hijackthis log. Any help would be appreciated. P.S. I also included startup list from hjt.

Hello,

Welcome, sorry for the delay, the holidays kind of threw a monkey wrench into the replies.

I am looking at a clean log, and AVG found nothing bad, but lets do a few things to check further.

First go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Hijackthis 1.99.1 as its an older version and download and install the newer one by Trendmicro.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop, double click it to install, follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files
Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe

Disable the TeaTimer, you can re enable it when were done if you wish

  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
  • If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
  • On the left hand side, Click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
  • Restart your computer.

Open Hijackthis to Scan Only, close all open windows including this one , place a checkmark in the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

Hello Richard,

Kaspersky is one of the better scanners for finding Viruses and it found nothing, your HJT log is clean  This could be a hardware problem or a problem with your ISP. What I would do is post in one of these forums for windows and hardware issues and see if they can help you. This forum is for Malware removal only so this is as far as I can go.

First thing I would do is go over to PcPitStop and you can basically take your system in for an online diagnostic check, like this forum its free but you need to sign up and become a member.

Windows Tech Support Forums

  • How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.
  • WhattheTech
  • TonyKlein CastleCops
  • Grinler BleepingComputer
  • GeeksTo Go
  • Dslreports

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0.0.6 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

Glad we could help

Safe Surfn
Ken
I appreciate your help, Ken. I run ad-aware2007, ss&d, spyware blaster, avg av and as, scshredder. I update definitions daily and do a system scan weekly. Normally ssd and adaware finds some things but nothing serious. I tend to agree with you that it's a hardware problem. I guess my next step would be a windows forum. Thanks again, Richard
