This is a new topic for me regarding a second computer - separate from the zlob.dnschanger issue you guys just help me fix on my laptop.

Over the past 3 days, my desktop has slowed to the point it is almost unusable. I have not added any applications or significant data over this time. Can you please help me rule out malware? THANKS!!

Howdy ysroq,

No infection, but it looks like something has altered the file path for your Windows Security Center there, which is not good. Can't exclude potentially this being caused by running SpyBot's TeaTimer and Windows Defender and Spyware Doctor all along with a full Norton security package. TeaTimer would block change, or return past unwanted change alone, and given some of your problems in your last thread on this system (which I see you never responded in) TeaTimer is NOT a tool you need enabled on a system. I can tell from all that and the ActiveX history of Downloaded Program files what is showing as way too much attention on malware and malware scans/removal, and this all can really damage a healthy system. before we go much further though, what did you do about the infection being discussed here before, since the repair dropped off without follow-up. Post back on that and do the following disables for starters.

First, please disable SpyBot's TeaTimer.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.
You can re-enable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Then disable Windows Defender.

* Open Windows Defender
* Click Tools
* Click General Settings
* Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
* Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
* After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
* Close Windows Defender

And Disable Spyware Doctor.

1. Open Spyware Doctor
2. Click on the 'Settings' button on the left hand panel
3. Then click on the 'Startup Settings' under 'Pick a Category'
4. Uncheck the box on the right that says 'Run at Windows Startup'

Then if you never truly addressed the past DNS settings changes, let's see what's up there first. No SmitFraud issues concerns, but this scan looks at areas we might want to check.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually the C drive), and launch from there.

NOTE: Please do not run any other options from SmitfraudFix until we discuss the results.

And go to Start - Run, type cmd (and OK). At the prompt copy/paste the following (hit Enter after).

sc qc wscsvc > c:\locate.txt & start notepad c:\locate.txt

A text box will open - please copy/paste the contents back here.
Jintan: Thanks for helping me out. I am not sure what you are referring to with regard to my abandoning a past course of action / thread here on Tom Coyote. Last week, Shaba helped me with an issue with a different computer and we were able to fix it. I followed all his instructions and everything worked out very well. A while ago I had issues with that same laptop and got help from someone else. This thread regards a different computer. At any rate, I will take the steps that you recommend when I get back home on to that desktop this evening and post the results. Thanks again!!! TW
Hmmm - I'm not too sure I know what I was referring to on no past response either. I was attempting to do more than two things at once and likely got my threads mixed. Yes, do the steps and let's follow-up from there.
I have disabled WD, TeaTimer and Spyware Doctor. Here is my SmitFraud log. Thanks!! One unwanted item located, and the file path for that Security Center has definitely been changed. What brought the change is a good question though. Not a run of the mill change either, and not something causally addressed without potentially making things worse, so I'll have to bone up on the correct settings for that. Let's check if this change is here due to malware for now.

Download gmer.zip from here. Once downloaded, doubleclick on gmer.zip and unzip the file to its own folder

When you have done this, doubleclick on Gmer.exe to run it and click on Settings. Check the first five settings (see below)

System Protection and Tracing
Processes
Save created processes to the log
Drivers
Save loaded drivers to the log

You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.

Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab. Look at the righthand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive and then click on Scan (before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan). When completed, click on the Copy button and rightclick on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and rightclick again and choose Paste. Copy the information and post it here please.
When you check back in let's also be sure that service can even be started with the incorrect file path. In addition to the things already requested, Go to Start - Run, type services.msc (and OK).

On the list locate and double-click on the following item.

Security Center

Under Service Status, if Stopped click Start. If it is already Started, click Stop, then the Apply button, allow the task to complete, then Start and Apply.

Apply/OK and exit. And if you would post an update on how that went with your next reply. Likely it will be stopped and will not start - let's see what you find.
GMER: I followed your instructions, downloaded GMER, set the settings, let it reboot, chose the C drive only and selected Scan. Part way through the scan, my computer crashed and rebooted itself. I tried again and got the same results. This seemingly occurred after the scan got through the C drive and moved on to scan "Devices". I will follow the instructions in your subsequent post and let you know the results. Thanks!
Per your instruction I went out and double clicked on Security Center. The service was in Stopped mode. As you predicted, I was unable to Start it. What next? Thanks!!!
Let's just flow with the one bit of Zlob related infection for now and adjust as we go. Windows Defender and Spyware Doctor continue to show as running process, so be sure to make sure they are not getting restarted at reboot etc. Either one will interfere in unpredicatable ways here.

Don't really want to have you add any additional software there, but for now Go here and download the free version of SUPERAntiSpyware and install it.

After installation accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest infection definition files. Next follow the prompts to complete the installation. For now, uncheck the option to have SUPERAntiSpyware "Automatically check for program and definition updates". Providing an email address and allowing the software to send diagnostic reports to it's research center are up to you. Do NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to Protect your Home Page settings.

Once the installation is complete open SUPERAntiSpyware and press the Preferences button. Under the General and Startup tab, uncheck the following (leaving all other settings as is).

Start-up Options:
*Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts

Automatic Updates:
*Check for program updates when the application starts.

Start-up Scanning:
*Check for updates before scanning on startup.

Then select Close. Don't scan just yet though.

——————————-

Go Here and download ATF cleaner. Click on the downloaded file to run it, and select "Select All", then click Empty Selected (and close ATF).

If you have them, also click on Firefox/Opera at the top and repeat the steps (and close ATF). Firefox/Opera will need to be closed first for the cleaning to be effective.

===============================================

Reboot into Safe Mode (at startup tap the F8 key and select Safe Mode).

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. If it does, restart back into Safe Mode to complete the next step.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

————-

Open SUPERAntiSpyware and click the Scan your Computer button. Making sure that Fixed Drive (NTFS) is checked (typically the C Drive), check "Perform Complete Scan", then click Next. SUPERAntiSpyware will now complete a system scan.

SUPERAntiSpyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found. Make sure that they all have a check next to them and click next. If prompted allow the reboot (or manually reboot at this time), and after the reboot open SUPERAntiSpyware again (double click the bug-shaped Taskbar icon).

Click Preferences, then under the Statistics/Logs tab, click to select the most recent Scan Log, then click View Log. Save the log to your desktop, and copy/paste the text from the log back here.

And post back that log along with the rapport.txt please.
After running smitfraudfix, should I be running Superantispyware in Safe Mode? The instructions don't really tell me to reboot into normal mode. Thanks!

If it does, restart back into Safe Mode to complete the next step.

But that isn't really the best of attention grabbers, is it. I'll have to use clearer words, but yes, Safe Mode for Super as well please.
Sorry about my poor reading comprehension skills :)

Here are the logs you requested. Thanks!!

Running a little shy on infection to check out here. I will provide now a repair of the Security Center. To be square with you on this, though this is a well known and trusted repair that should include correcting the path error showing for your service, we have yet to determine exactly what made that change. If necessary one recovery method to restore it to proper order if needed is to reinstall the SP2 upgrade, but only if this system was upgraded (was originally XP or XP SP1). Do you happen to recall if it is an upgrade?

Click here and download wscfix.zip (by Ramesh Srinivasan). Extract that and click on wscsvcfix.exe to start the repair. Follow all prompts provided. Then reboot, and post back here a new HijackThis log please.

Also go to Start - Run, again type services.msc (and Enter) and check on the status of the Service Center service. It should now be "automatic" and "Started".
I went out to Security Center and had to switch it to Automatic and Start myself, but at least I was able to do that.

Here is HJT. Thanks!!
