Please help - my laptop worked fine yesterday but now the kb and touchpad become unresponsive moments after windows xp loads up. If I boot in safe mode I don't have this problem, only in normal mode. I have a duplicate laptop and when I swapped that harddrive into this laptop, same problems. That would seem to mean it is a hardware problem, but since things work in safe mode, I expect malware is to blame.

Here's my HJT report (while running safe mode):

Also, here is the report when running in normal mode. I was able to use a USB mouse to run the program and save the report.

Hello,

Welcome, sorry about the delay. Your HJT log is fine but there is no reason to have HJT run at Startup.

Open HJT.
Go to Misc Tools
Main.
And take the checkmark out of HJT running on Startup.

I am not looking at any Anti Virus software on your system, in this day and age with all the threats going around this is kind of suicidal. You can install ONLY ONE of these free programs.

You should also have a Firewall, the windows firewall only blocks incoming threats, you need one that is bilateral that can block outgoing also.

Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs,

This appears to be a hardware or windows issue so I suggest you post here. This forum is for removing Malware and Viruses only

Ken :D
Ken, thanks for the reply. I see by your comments I didn't explain completely. My machine didn't have any security software on it only because I had just reinstalled the factory image. I was thinking it was malware and since I already had my important files backed up, I just figured it would be easy to start over with a fresh image. But, the fresh image didn't fix the problem so then I came to your forum for expert advice. Right after the new image was on, I installed HJT and put it in the startup group so it would run immediately before the the keyboard and mouse were disabled. On my other 2 pc's I have running the McAfee security that comes bundled with my comcast service, just so you know I don't normally run without network security in place :) . So you really think this is hardware/drivers and not malware? I was using it one day, browsing online just fine. The next day I start it up and the cpu is running full tilt so as not to allow kb and touchpad to register. I'll go ahead and post in the hardware section if you say so, but I just wanted to expalin a bit more so you had all the info to go by. Pleas advise Thanks again
gammaJ,

Sounds like a hardware issue, we can doublecheck to make sure.

Run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.
Ken, you were correct about it being hardware. While I was waiting for your response, I went to the hardware forum and saw a thread with similar trouble to mine. That person found that if they started their laptop with the battery removed, the problems dissapeared. I tried it myself, and it worked for me too! I'll pursue this further in the hardware forum. Thanks again!
gammaJ,

Your very welcome.
