hi
My nephew's puter is so crammed with bugs that it will only sometimes boot.
When it does boot, it takes up to a half hour, and then it usually freezes.
Consequently, I was only able to run HJT in windows safe mode, and I don't know if that helps you.
His OS is windows XP
Incidentally, I believe they tried AdAware and maybe Spybot s&d
Also, I think they ran the system restore utility in XP………… probably not a good thing.
Any help will be appreciated.
Anyway, here is the HJT log….. from windows safe mode.

Hello Doggins and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

This may be a difficult fix without the ability to get the computer into Normal Mode.
We'll try to clean up some of the nasty items and see if we can get the computer to boot-up normally.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if found):

New.Net
Internet Optimizer
SideFind
MaxSpeed

Reboot the computer. Disable the offending Services
  • Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
  • Scroll down to Command Service and right click on it.
  • Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
  • Repeat this for the following services:gudblqvfcgci
    System Startup Service
    Windows Overlay Components
Delete the offending Services
  • Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
  • In the Delete window, type cmdService and press OK.
  • OK any prompts.
  • Repeat for the following services:
    • gudblqvfcgci
      SvcProc
      Windows Overlay Components
  • Close HijackThis, and restart your computer.
Delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINNT\T3duZXIA << Whole Folder
C:\WINNT\system32\vfcgci << Whole Folder

C:\WINNT\svcproc.exe << File Only
C:\WINNT\abqyokq.exe << File Only

Now check to see if you can reboot the computer into Normal Mode. Scan with HijackThis and post the fresh log as a reply to this thread.
Let me know of any complications in the above instructions.
Thank you for your attention and advice.
Wow, you have indeed managed to get the machine to boot into normal mode!
After following your instructions, the first time I tried booting to normal, the machine had a few hiccups, including some alerts and error messages.
Here are the error mesages I got:

IPCSAUTH.exe Application error
Ox&c80d189 referenced memory at 0dc85c6FF memory could not be read

SKMBATT.exe Application error
(the same type of memory reference problem as the above, although the memory location was different)

A tiny alert box (which I believe to be related to Yahoo Msgr.) also came up, saying the following:
Protection Error
error 34

The machine froze, and I rebooted again to normal mode.
This time it was a successful boot, but after booting I get the following:

The msconfig box comes up, saying we are in selective startup mode.
I click OK and msconfig opens.
I click OK, and we are up and running.

There is one more box.
It is some kind of uninstaller for something called Select Cashback
It asks me to type in a code that it provides, if I wish to uninstall Select Cashback
I just hit Cancel……. and we are running in normal mode.

Next I scanned with HJT, and here is the fresh log:

Glad to hear the computer is booting into Normal Mode now. This will make it much easier to fix. There are many infections found so it will take several posts to fix the problems.

BEFORE BEGINNING, Please read completely through the instructions below and download the files from the links provided. You may want to save or print out these instructions for easier reference.

First, download Ewido Security Suite.

Next, download Ad-Aware SE and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Install Ad-Aware using the default options, then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, taking all the defaults there as well.

Open Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then click on Add-ons in the lefthand column. Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again. This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware, select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next. Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again. Select all objects found (right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects"). Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.

You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK". Exit Ad-Aware and restart your PC once again.

When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next". Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then exit Ad-Aware.

For a final cleanup, please install and run Ewido.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
Please finish up by rebooting your system once more, and posting a new HijackThis log and the log from the Ewido scan.

Please post the Uninstall List from HijackThis
  • Open Hijackthis and click None of the above, just start the program.
  • Click Config… < Misc Tools < Open Uninstall Manager.
  • Click Save list… and save the file as uninstall_list.txt to a location of your choice.
  • Copy/Past the results of this file in your next reply.
hi again
I know your time is valuable, so if the machine is too messed up let me know and I will just format it :)
Here is what happened:

I ran the VX2 cleaner and rebooted….several times
some of the boot attempts were messy, and a couple of them froze
It kept saying it had found a new VX2 Variant
I never did get a message saying the VX2 tool found the system to be clean

I hope I didn't make a bad decision, but I decided to go ahead with the AdAware Smart System scan
I did this a few times, each time rebooting
during one scan, I got swamped with Internet Explorer popups
eventually it looked like AdAware was finished cleaning.

Then I ran the Ewido, and it found about 1400 nasties, most of them listed as trojans, trojan droppers, spyware, and adware

After Ewido finished, I rebooted, and the machine wanted to run Scandisk and Chkdsk
When it finally booted (still sluggish) …..I ran HJT for a new log.

I am leery of posting the Ewido log, because it is huge…..too big for notepad to open
it lists roughly 1400 items
I have it, and will post it at your further request

Here is the HJT Uninstall list, followed by the new HJT log

You can delete the Ewido log as I have instructed to run it again later on in the fix. You can post the new Ewido log as it should be much smaller.
No need to Format the computer as we can get it clean. It will take several posts but we'll get you through it.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

Step 5
I noticed that you have an old version of Spybot S&D on your computer. Please download the new version and install according to the following instructions.

Scanning With Spybot S&D;:
  • Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D; accepting the Default Settings.
  • In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
  • Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D.
  • Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the Updates.
  • Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’
  • When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window.
  • Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
  • Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
  • REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.
  • Do not enable Tea Timer until the log is clean as it will prevent the fix from working.

Step 6
Scan again with Ewido:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').
  • Launch Ewido again.
    • Click on scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the boxes that say "Perform action on all infections"and "Create encrypted backup" then choose clean and click OK.
    • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
    • Click Save report.
    • Save the report.txt file to your desktop.
  • Now close ewido security suite.
Step 7
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
your patience and dedication are humbling before I proceed with your latest instructions, I think I need to know if I am booting properly. Although I am indeed booting to normal mode and not Safe Mode, I do get the msconfig box each time. It shows that we are using "Selective Startup" …processing win.ini and system.ini etcetera….. rather than "Normal Startup"……load all device drivers and software I never know whether to click Cancel or OK. If I click OK, I am immediately asked to reboot for the changes to take effect. And I don't know if this is due to the original steps in this fix, or if I should set it to "Normal Startup", or just hit Cancel each time. Any thoughts on this? By the way, it boots quickly to the desktop wallpaper, but then it becomes very sluggish as things load, and I have to wait minutes before I can do anything.
Click Start < Run and type msconfig in the run box then "enter" to open the system configuration utility. On the General tab, click the box for "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services", then apply. This should stop it from asking you every time you restart.
hi again

I booted up in preparation for proceeding with your recent directions.

I did run msconfig, and set it to Normal Startup…..load all drivers and services.
That required a reboot.

After that reboot, the machine was quite sluggish as I opened HJT to begin the scan.
HJT began scanning finally, and when it finished I began to check the items as per your directions.
I had checked the first 4 or 5………and it was then that I got swamped with numerous popups in both Netscape and IE.
I could not keep up with them. While I tried closing one, 2 or 3 more would open.
In a moment or 2 it was hopeless.

ctrl-alt-del
shutdown
restart
Once again…..sluggish, popups, alerts…

rebooted to Safe Mode
ran msconfig and put it back on Selective Startup
booted to Normal Mode
Now things were calmer, and I was able to scan again with HJT.
This scan showed many of the old nasties had returned…….. especially 04 items

Anyway, I proceeded with your directions.
Checked the items you mentioned and had HJT fix them.

In step 3, I only had 2 problems:
1.) Five of the files you wanted me to delete were nowhere to be found, even though I made sure to show all files including system files.

and….
2.) I could not delete the folder C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3
It says a file in there is in use by another program
Same result in Safe Mode
I even tried it in DOS……..with the same result

No problems with steps 4 and 5
Spybot s&d found a couple things, and fixed them.

step 6 had a hitch:
Ewido would not respond in Safe Mode…..
I tried a few times, but is would freeze and turn grey (program not responding)
Finally booted to normal mode and was able to scan with Ewido.

I see it found stuff in "restore"…… that is where a lot of them were yesterday in that huge log with 1400 entries.

Here is the new Ewido log, from XP in Normal Mode, followed by the new HJT log:

It looks like there is something on your computer that is a magnet to all of the other infections. :(
We'll need to try another approach by killing the 020 entry that won't go away then see if it will allow us to kill everything else.

I need you to locate this file (repairs302972943.dll) on the computer before beginning step one. It should be located here: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\repairs302972943.dll but you will need to double check. If it is in a different location be sure to write it down and change the path to it in step 1.

Step 1
**Please remember to keep Internet Explorer closed and disconnect from the internet while following these instructions**

1. Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

2. Click the "go" tab. Find the: "Appinit_Dlls" key in the right hand pane and and double click to find the "Value" data. Confirm that C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\repairs302972943.dll appears in the 'Value' field.

3. Using Windows Explorer, go to your root drive: C:\ and create a new folder called 'Hijack' and within that folder, create two new folders, one called 'Backups' and one called 'Junk'.

4. Use the Registrar Lite program. Copy and paste the key below into reglite's address bar and click 'Go':

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\

5. Click on the Windows key to highlight it in purple, and use the top menu File>Export and save as (in the C:\Hijack\Backups folder):

1) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

6. Navigate to C:\Hijack\Backups and confirm both files have been successfully saved.

7. Use the Registrar Lite program again. Copy and paste the key below into reglite's address bar and hit 'Go':

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

8. Right-click on the Windows key in the left pane and rename it to notwindows. Then double-click "Appinit_Dlls" value in right pane and erase the data in the 'Value' box at the bottom of the new pane.

The data to remove will be:

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\repairs302972943.dll", hit 'Apply' and 'Ok' to set.

9. Rename 'NotWindows' back to 'Windows' in the left pane

10. Close Registrar Lite and reboot the computer. If everything works you should now be able to delete this file.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\repairs302972943.dll.

Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

Step 3
Click here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINNT\System32\yzxjyc.exe

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
before I proceed I better ask this: In step 1 you want me to keep internet explorer closed. Lately that has been out of my control. If it wants to launch and offer popups, it just does it on it's own. I can unplug the cable so there is no physical internet connection, but….. Is there something I should do to make sure IE stays closed? And what about Netscape, which is also on the machine?
You may need to boot into Safe Mode to keep the pop-ups from opening Internet Explorer. Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').
I could not delete………. repairs302972943.dll
Even in Safe Mode
It says the file is in use by another person or program

I did not have any trouble following the steps.
The only questionable part was the VALUE of Appinit_Dlls is listed as simply repairs302972943.dll

Rather than it being listed as the full path.

I did try entering the whole path as the VALUE Data, but that didn't help.

Incidentally, here is the path to the file on this machine:

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\repairs302972943.dll

Anyway, I went on to the first scan/fix using HJT
That scan showed most of the files you wanted me to fix, but not all of them.
About 5 of them did not show up.

Also, in the step where I pasted from the clipboard into Killbox, it only pasted 4 of the files I had copied to the clipboard.
One of them was SurfSidekick, which as you will see from the log, is still with us.

And finally, here is the fresh HJT log:

I have successfully deleted that file:

repairs302972943.dll

I know I am not supposed to take steps you have not instructed, and for that I do apologize.
I was frustrated.

On a whim, I renamed the windows key and then cleared the VALUE of Appinit_Dlls as you instructed.
Then I closed Registrar Lite and booted to Safe Mode.
In Safe Mode, I opened Registrar Lite, and named the key back to Windows.

I was then able to delete repairs302972943.dll

Booted to Normal Mode……. scanned with HJT, and that O20 entry was gone finally.

I checked the O4 entries for surfsidekick …… (there were 2 of them)….. and had HJT fix them.

I have since rebooted to Normal Mode twice, scanning with HJT each time, and there is no surfsidekick.
(At least not found by HJT….. it may still be in a folder somewhere I don't know).

I still have the cable unplugged so there is no internet connection.
I am leaving the machine turned on and not clicking anything until I get instructions from you.
I booted up, scanned with HJT………and saved the log.
I still have not closed HJT or done anything since saving this log:

Step 1
You have made changes to your Registry with Regedit/RegLite and the security permissions have been lowered when you renamed the Windows Key folder.

To repair the security permissions please do the following:

1)Please navigate to C:\Hijack\Backups and double click on the winkey.reg file and merge the information into the registry.

2)Now open Regedit/RegLite and go to File > import Winkey.hiv into the registry.

3)Copy and Paste the following bold text into the address bar of Reglite (navigate to this location with Regedit)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

4)Delete the entry in the AppInit_DLLs Value key which will look like: repairs302972943.dll and then close Regedit/RegLite. (the file no longer exists at that location so the registry entry is an orphan entry)

5)Reboot

Step 2
Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINNT\System32\??plorer.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here.

Step 3
  • Double-click it to run it.
  • Read then accept the agreement.
  • Check Drive, and select all local drives, scan all files, then press 'scan'. (This may take a while and will not fix anything)
  • Once it finds something, it will prompt you so click OK.
  • When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
  • Highlight it with the mouse, copy it (CTRL+C), and paste (CTRL+V) it in your next reply.
Note : It will find many orphaned registry entries so please do not be alarmed by the amount of items that show.

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include the mwavscan log and the results of FindFile.bat.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
