Hi - Hope I've done this right. Below is a copy of my Baseline Hijack Log. Every time I start up the computer I receive the following error: "Windows can not access the specified device, path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item. C:\Windows\system\kklodanain\smss.exe." Then another desk top error will pop up stating "Could not load or run C:\Windows\system\kklodanain\smss.exe specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the referense to it in the registry.

Today my AVG Anti-virus picked up that this was a worm. I deleted the virus from the virus vault, but am still receiving the error when I reboot my system.

Thank you in advance for any help received.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sorry about the delay in responding :( If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
:D Not a problem as far as having to wait! I'm just thankful for the help.

When I start up the computer I get a pop-up window under the heading C:\WINDOWS\system\kklodanain\smss.exe. The box that a red X in it and then reads: "Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\system\kklodanain\smss.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search". You push ok and then I get another pop-up with the Desktop Heading. In this box it a yellow exclamation point and it states "Could not load or run C:\WINDOWS\system\kklodanain\smss.exe specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry". You push ok on that and it goes back to the first pop up, push ok on that it goes back to the second pop-up and then finally it all goes away.

Last week AVG Anti-virus picked up the kklodanain as a worm. But when I removed it the start up errors still persisted. Otherwise the computer seems to be running okay.

I hope this information is helpful, below is my new log;

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
When I ran the first part of your clean-up instructions, regarding Hijackthis, I received the following error: "An unexpected error occurred, Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub Getlong Path (?.exe). Please send a report to [removed], mentioning what you were doing and what version of window you have. This message has been copied to your clipboard." Should I continue with the rest of the clean up and go on to the Combofix instructions?
