Hello,

For a long time time now whenever I boot my computer as soon my Windows Desktop comes up I immeidately get this error which states.."Fatal Error Error Reading Configuration".

Also a bit concerned about a virus recently but I think my AVAST anti-virus Program may have fixed the problem which was contained going into my Hotmail account.

Please see my very latest log from Hijackthis.. Thanks for any help on these issues.

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!
Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

Removing whats left of the malware you have, and you do have some left… may not take care of the error message you are receiving.
That sort of error can be cause by any number of software/hardware issues. Lets get your machine malware free first then go from there. That I know I can help you with.

  • Double clcik the smitfraud.exe
  • When promted
    Press any key to continue.
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with any others I have asked for in your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. When prompted by allow it to run

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

I attempted the Kaspersky program as you stated but it never functioned for me as you stated it. I clicked your link "Kaspersky Online Scanner" 2. clicked Kaspersky online scanner. 3. clicked "accept" 4. clicked to install "add on kavwebscan_unicode.cab" and I clicked on to "install active x" and from there I went back to the main screen "online scanner". So sorry no luck with the Kaspersky at this stage.

Reference to the error. Basically whenever I boot the computer and it arrives at the desktop, the unit will think for another 20 seconds or so and then place a bordered message which states, "FATAL ERROR - Error Reading Configuration". It does not seem to disrubpt the running of my laptop from what I can tell. I noticed the other day that I dont have Windows Sound Recorder.. when I click All PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, ENTERTAINMENT. It states it is empty. Would this have something to do with this error. Perhaps I have deleted at some stage windows files. This Fatal Error has been coming up on my laptop for about 3 years.
I'm still researching something else for you.
So For now.
