"In theory", yes. BUT - in practice, it does not always work that way. Upgrading to a new, and considerably different operating systems is a major operation. Generally, I would not recommend it as it is generally better to simply start over, that is, wipe the drive (and all your data) and do a fresh install.

Having said that, if your computer is more than a year old, I would not upgrade to Vista anyway. Vista is designed to support today's hardware. Hardware designed for XP was designed to support a 6 year old operating system and 6 years is eons in the IT industry. It would be better to get your XP running correctly.

I see you say XP is freezing, note that is very often caused by hardware - so at the very least, you must determine why it is freezing before upgrading anyway. It would sure be a bummer if you spent money for Vista, only to find out your hardware is still freezing.

So tell us about your computer and what's wrong with your it now, and maybe we can help.
Well its a laptop, sorry for not mention that :) I got my laptop from my work all brand new, HP 6715 check www.hp.com and see how nice it is :) humm when i start up the comp all the progs from the bar down below Right are not starting propper. Hi,
Welcome to the WTT forums.
Yes it is sometimes possible to do this………….. however It is wise to check that your back up is 100% up to date, accurate and reproducible. There is always a chance of data loss or corruption occurring in your files, settings and or configurations.

You might like to consider taking a disc image of your old system and data partitions to a removable hard drive (USB) as a bit of extra "insurance". (Ghost, Paragon, Drive Image, or Acronis are worth considering for this)
At least then you will be able to quickly re-image your disc back to your old XP installation, should disaster strike.

Some experts always recommend that a change to Vista should be by way of a "clean" install only (IE wiping your old disc with all it's information and installing Vista on a "clean" disc

Other experts quite often recommend that a system running XP satisfactorily should be left as it is……. and if Vista is required then a new machine is purchased with it preinstalled. (From a purely personal viewpoint this would be my preferred option)

There are a number of steps you will need to consider (if you haven't done so already) and you could take a look here for some more information

If it's new then see if it is still under warranty before you invalidate that.

There are several models of the 6715 - some may be capable of running Vista, others are NOT! If yours only has 1Gb of RAM, then IMO, you are making a mistake! Vista requires lots of horsepower in terms of CPU and lots of RAM to work with.

Boot up problems, again, are often caused by hardware issues. Do you have any errors in Device Manager? Have you scanned for malware? What do you have for security?

EDIT Sorry Digerati, I really must learn to type a bit quicker!

Turnabout fair play I guess!
humm every time i start up i get this, looking for a new hardware device, it pops up after like 2-3 min, when i close it my internet Thingy pops up propperly again, I really hate the wait :) Hope you understand my bad English :)

Once again, do you have any errors in Device Manager? Have you scanned for malware? What do you have for security?

Sorry, i had to go yesturday to my dentist. No errors what so ever. hehe dont know what malware is, and i got TREND as security. prolly got lots of others security like firewalls and stuffs here @ my work.
Sorry for being slow.
Malware is the term for malicious software - that includes spyware, viruses, worms, Trojans, keyloggers, or just about any other unwanted stuff badguys attempt to dump on your computer. What Trend Micro security product are you using? There are several, and not all provide full coverage. And is it updated? Do you have an IT person at your work? And again, is this computer under warranty?
sorry again for forgetting. my comp is all fine now. i removed all the stuff on the comp and installed VIsta, its working great! Well now i know what to do with the information you gave me :) pay it forward hehe Thanks for everything!!
