For some unknown reason my AVG antivirus suddenly disappeared from my taskbar and my computer's date changed to 2081. I corrected the date. Then everything started acting extremely slow like 5 or 10 minutes for a window to open. Computer boots extremely slow too. I tried totally deleting my AVG free antivirus and reinstalling it but it keeps saying "installation failed". Here is one error message I get…….Local machine: installation failed Initialization: Error: Checking of state of the item directory $vault$.avg (D:\) failed. The system cannot read from the specified device. (30) %PATH% = "D:\$vault$.avg"

My C drive is partitioned into two parts. Windows XP (which I do not use) and Windows ME which I use.
I would reformat and get rid of the partitioning but don't know how without erasing all the info on my Win ME section. I also have another hard drive hooked up that is my D drive and is slaved to my C drive. I use it simply for extra storage.

When I first downloaded the hijack this exe scan, it would not open. I renamed it to hijackthis.com and then the icon changed to a correct one and I was able to run the log scan.

Below is my log scan using hijack this. Could someone please help?
Thanks very much.
Bill A.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\plarupfq.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

Thanks so much for answering LDTate. I have windows ME edition, and I tried what you said and went to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM but then there is no file called plarupfq.exe to be found for me to scan. There is nothing that even starts with the letters "pla" in the system folder. My C drive is partitioned into two parts, Win Me and Win xp. I do not use the xp and only use the me part of the drive. Is it possible the file you want me to scan could be in the win xp partitioned part of the harddrive? I never use the xp part of the harddrive so I wouldn't think there would be any problems on that part of the drive. Not sure what to do here. Help!
It shows in your log. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pmsccpkg] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\plarupfq.exe To configure Windows to show all files 1.Do one of the following: In Windows 98/Me/2000, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon. 2.Do one of the following: In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options. On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types. 3.Do one of the following: In Windows Me/2000/XP, uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders. If you see a warning message, click Yes. Click Apply. Click OK. Now see if you can see it.
I unchecked the hide file extensions for known file types and unchecked the hide protected operating system files and I made sure show hidden files and folders was checked.

The file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\plarupfq.exe still did not show up.

I even tried the search for files and folders for plarupfq.exe and nothing showed up.

Please help.

I did another hijackthis log scan and this is what it says…..

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
