Hi there

~12 hours ago I was directed to download an ActiveX control while trying to view a video and I ended up infected with "Trojan.Zlob-X.a". Now every time when I initially open Internet Explorer, or a new tab, I get the following popup message (sometimes several times):

Critical System Warning!
Your system is probably infected with latest version of Trojan.Zlob-X.a.
Full system optimization will greatly increase your computer's performance and prevent data loss.
Click OK to download antispyware software! (Recommended)

I've run the following searches (with completely updated definitions) with no success:
Spybot: Search & Destroy
Ad-Aware SE personal
McAfee SecurityCenter

Please help me with removing this little nasty.

UPDATE
I have fixed the following entry:

O2 - BHO: Video DivX 3.12 - {16096942-15C5-4629-BD81-00A46B2408CA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysdivx.dll

I have also navigated to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and made sure that "sysdivx.dll" and "sysdivx.dll.bak" are no longer there.

This has fixed the problem with Internet Explorer.

This is my new HJT log:

medbuoy,

Welcome to the forum, what you removed was related to the Smitfraud trojan, most times its best to leave things be and post in this forum for help,

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware Free to your desktop.

  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware Free , locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware Free <-- Do not run the scan yet.

Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

  • Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart into normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware Free by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware Free
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:

Reboot normally.

  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
  • Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Post the log from Smitfraud fix, the AVG Spyware log and a New HJT log please

Hi Ken

Followed your instructions verbatim. When I ran AVG I did everything you said but it didn't generate a log/report. There were 5 malware detected, 4 of which were cookies and 1 was a tracer. I didn't take much note of the tracer because I thought a report would be generated which you could look at, but as I have said, I didn't get a report.

Good Morning,

Your log is not looking to bad but lets run both these programs to be sure everything is gone

Please download SuperAntiSpyware
Install the program
  • Run SuperAntiSpyware and click: Check for updates
  • Once the update is finished, on the main screen, click: Scan your computer
  • Check: Perform Complete Scan
  • Click Next to start the scan.
Superantispyware scans the computer, and when finished, lists all the infections found.
Make sure everything found has a check next to it, and press: Next
Then, click Finish

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

It is possible that the program asks to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
  • Click: Preferences
  • Click the Statistics/Logs tab
  • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log
It opens in your default text editor (such as Notepad)

Please provide the SuperAntiSpyware log in your reply, as well as a new HijackThis log.

Post both reports and a new HJT log please

That's all of it. Fingers crossed! It kinda sounds a bit monotonous, but thanks again for your help.

As it's now half an hour past midnight (here in sunny Brisbane, AU) I think I might call it a night. Catch you tomorrow

Things are looking good

Run this system cleaner.

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3 <--This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

How are things running now ??

Good afternoon

I've done what you asked and I'm noticing some small differences. I have rebooted the system twice to see if it starts up any faster but it is still quite slow. As for general use of the laptop I have found that the start menu seems to be much more responsive, MS Word and McAfee seem to load faster and I don't get error messages when I shut the laptop down anymore (this used to bug me!).

On a side note, I was going through the list of startup programs using SS&D to stop BitTorrent from loading at startup and I noticed it identifies several entries as spyware, malware or trojans. I am not sure this is something I should be asking you about, but I will post the log just in case. The entries I am referring to are as follows: NeroCheck, QuickTime Task, SunJavaUpdateSched and ctfmon.exe. The source it quotes is the Paul Collins startup list. I have unticked the boxes so that only ctfmon.exe starts when I boot the laptop and it seems to be running without any problems. Should I be concerned about any of these and if so, how should I go about removing them?

Good Morning,

All the scans are coming up clean so I don't think there is anything to worry about.

This is what these are related to, there is no file associated with the entry so you can safely remove them with HJT

Spyware Doctor
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

Windows Live Messenger
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Adobe Acrobat
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AE7CD045-E861-484f-8273-0445EE161910} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {47833539-D0C5-4125-9FA8-0819E2EAAC93} - (no file)

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0.0.11 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

Glad we could help

Safe Surfn
Ken

Hi Thanks for the help and the suggestions re: protection from future problems. I'll look into each option. Fingers crossed things stay clean, but if not, I know where to come for reliable, understanding helpers. You guys are genuine legends. Thanks again - and hope you have a great Christmas and New Year. Gotta fly Steve
