Good Point! Yes, in this case, the instructions come from starband themselves. If I understand this, they use the local host file to skip domain lookup access (about 1/2 second delay they say). So it appears that some nasty evil bad bad bad virus overwrote my host file and cut me off from you guys? Don't you take this personally? And should I, dare I, make the host file writable again? Is that necessary for my accelarator to work?
So I went ahead and reconnected to the net. Updated Norton virus definitions and did a full scan - it picked up a "Downloader". I pulled the following information from the norton logSource: Manual Scanner Risk category: Virus Click for more information about this risk : Downloader Action taken: Deleted Description: Affected areas:1 Files:ATPartners.inf within C:\Program Files\PestPatrol\Quarantine\20041106074353687.zip - DeletedStill infected? It did not pick this up last night when I ran a full scan but that was with older (a week ago) definition files.
OK - Done. Interesting that Norton would suddenly find something there - I've not used that program since 2004… or so I believe. So do things look clear now? Current HJT log is: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 12:30:38 PM, on 12/15/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16544) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\PIFSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTSvcCDA.EXE C:\Program Files\Gilat\QMS\QMS.exe C:\Program Files\Gilat\GSU\GSU.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Gilat\IBQoS\ibqossvc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$MICROSOFTBCM\Binn\sqlservr.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Promise\Utility\MsgAgt.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Dantz\RETROS~1\wdsvc.exe C:\Program Files\GILAT\Internet Page Accelerator\RPAService.exe C:\PROGRA~1\GILAT\INTERN~1\AS_Agent.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Flash Networks\NettGain2000\Bst\Srvany.exe C:\Program Files\Flash Networks\NettGain2000\Bst\WgwMngr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\MsPMSPSv.exe C:\Program Files\Canon\CAL\CALMAIN.exe C:\Program Files\Gilat\NetAgent.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\WDBtnMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\StarBand\Mission Control\TaskBarClient.exe C:\Program Files\WDC\SetIcon.exe C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mmtask.exe C:\WINDOWS\LTMSG.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\StarBand\Mission Control\HsuGui\HsuGuiControl.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\hphmon05.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb08.exe C:\Program Files\HP DVD\Umbrella\DVDTray.exe C:\PROGRA~1\StarBand\MISSIO~1\evrep.exe C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\Surround Mixer\CTSysVol.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTHELPER.EXE C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\DVDAudio\CTDVDDet.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Unload\hpqcmon.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\CLI.EXE C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\My Book\WD Backup\uBBMonitor.exe C:\Program Files\interMute\SpamSubtract\SpamSub.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Console\NSCSRVCE.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\NMain.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NORTON~1\navw32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\StarBand\Mission Control\ntstatus.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R1 - [*]If shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

Here's my usual all clean post

      Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

      %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

      Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
      Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."

[*]If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

[*]Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

[*]Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week

(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

[*]Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.

Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

            Understanding and Using Firewalls

[*]Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

[*]Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

[*]Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer

settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
