When the ethernet cable is connected, 100+ Symantec Email Proxy error messages and "Scanning message" windows appear on login. At certain intervals (even in Safe Mode) a pop up appears claiming to be a Windows Security Alert with the following message:

Warning! Potential Spyware Operation
Your computer is making unauthorized copies of your system and Internet files. Run full scan now to pervent [sic] any unathorised [sic] access to your files! Click YES to download spyware remover…

Clicking yes attempts to load gomyhit.com (though I did not click yes until I had disconnected the ethernet cable, I suspect the person who uses the computer may have). The control panels are inaccessible even from an admin account and even in Safe Mode. On one account (but not all) the Task Manager is inaccessible.

I ran Spybot Search & Destory which only found the registry entries preventing the Control Panels and Task Manager from being used. It fixed the error temporarily (even after a reboot), but then Explorer crashed and when it reloaded, the Control Panels were unavailable again.
