Dear Friends,
Please help me. My computer is totally out of my control!
My Norton antivirus 2004 started malfunctioning and now cannot be launched even after reinstalling. I cannot run @msconfig@ to check for startup.
As annoyingly my webpages are hijacked by 'anglefire.com' and 'harro.3x.ro' etc sites. I cannot open the symantec sites. After booting my computer, it runs ok for an hour. Then, I get pop-up boxes saying: 'Symantec email proxy; your email message is rejected/ unable to send' and the screen gets covered by windows saying 'SYMANTEC SCANNING MESSAGES'.
I check my computer using ad-aware.
This is what I got after a scan with spybot. Please help if you can!
Thank you.
Suman Das.

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.com!

May your day be blessed by those you love and those you love be blessed by HIM. - Coyote

You've got quite a log there. Unfortunately it has a few things you don't want. :(

Let's start off with a free online virus scan/removal from Trend-Micro here:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

If it finds but fails to remove anything, please supply that info in your next post.

Reboot after the scan is complete.

Next you need to make a PERMANENT folder for HUjack This!, and MOVE it there. If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

After the virus scan, and moving Hijack This! to it's new "home", run it again and post a new log in this thread. :)
Dear Mikah6:8,
Thank you so much.
I tried what you said, and trendmicro-housecall detected these:
WORM SASSER.E in windows\system32\31949… and
TROJ MITGLIED.AZ in windows\system32\ytuii.exe
Unfortunately it said it is unable to remove as the files are in use.
I opened symantec site and downloaded and deleted the firest one , but not sure how to delete the second one. I cannot run the 'run\regedit' from my taskbar (nothing happens).
Anyway this is my latest scan logfile:
Hope this will solve the problem.
Bye,
Suman Das.

Next boot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to show you how if necessary.

Next, press these 3 keys at the same time:

The task manager will appear on the screen.

Click the "Processes" tab at the top.

Scroll through the running processes. Each time you find one of the processes listed below, click it to highlight it, then click "End Process".

The processes we need to end are these (they may be in there more than once):

ijk.exe
NAVSCAN32.exe
scrgrd.exe
wserv32.exe
fsgme.exe
dfshf.exe

Then, using windows explorer, find and delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ijk.exe <– file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\scrgrd.exe <– file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wserv32.exe <– file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\NAVSCAN32.exe <– file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fsgme.exe <– file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dfshf.exe <– file

They may be "hidden". Use the link in my signature to show you how to show "hidden" files if necessary.

Now, double click the "mhjt.bat" file on your desktop. This should make a permanent folder for Hijack This!, move it there, and run it. If it fails, please give me the error that is displayed in your next post.

Close all windows and programs except Hijack This!

Using Hijack This! fix these things:

The experts say the "mhjt.bat" won't work (this time). Please refer to my previous post on how to make a "permanent" folder for Hijack This!
Dear Mikah,
Thanks for your effort.
Yesterday after I succeeded in getting rid of the worm but not the trojan, I found today that my computer suddenly a message saying that the Norton antivirus is launched. I could download the updates and scan the system. I deleted both the sassare worm and the mitglied trojan as well as some other malwares.
I have scanned with hijack it, and sending you the latest logfile:
Please tell me if my computer is now free of aliens or not.
Thanks a lot,
Suman Das.

You're doing great, doc

Those "bugs" just come and go sometimes….

It appears we only have 1 bug left to swat.

Hopefully it won't reproduce before it goes…. ;)

Please boot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature if necessary to show you how.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND PROGRAMS EXCEPT HIJACK THIS!

Run Hijack This! and fix these things:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SOUNDMAN] htp.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [SOUNDMAN] htp.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SOUNDMAN] htp.exe

O16 - DPF: {08BEF711-06DA-48B2-9534-802ECAA2E4F9} (PlxInstall Class) - https://www.plaxo.com/down/release/PlaxoInstall.cab

Reboot in "safe" mode again, and find and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\htp.exe <— file

It may be "hidden". Use the link in my signature to tell you how to show "hidden" files if necessary.

Reboot in normal mode and post a new log file. :)

After we get all the "bugs" out, I have some info on some other tasks I see running that you may want to disable. But they're just "optional" fixes. I'll give you the info on them and let you decide.

But, that'll be AFTER you swat this last bug B)

YIPPEE!!! :weee: :weee: :weee: I don't see a single worm, trojan, virus or malware in your log!!!! I'd like you to make sure your antivirus is up to date, and run a virus scan. Then use the link in my signature, and do the online scan from Trend-Micro. If they both say your clean.. Then I believe it!!! If either of them find anything, please supply that info in your next post. If they DON'T find anything, let me know as well. GOOD JOB!!!! M68 :)
Dear Micah, Oh, what a relief! :P :wavey: I scanned the whole computer with both trend-micro(housecall) and fully updated Norton antivirus. They both have have reported the computer clean. Let me know if any other fixes (even if optional) that you may recommend. Thanks  Suman Das.
Here are spme purely "optional" fixes:

Go here:

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_o.htm

And read about this program you have running:

opware32.exe

In that link it tells you the possible problems, and also how to turn that program "off".

Then read here:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&safe;…dcg%404ax.com#p

About this task:

C:\Program Files\REGSHAVE\REGSHAVE.EXE /AUTORUN

If you decide to remove that program from your startup, fix this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [REGSHAVE] C:\Program Files\REGSHAVE\REGSHAVE.EXE /AUTORUN

Remember, that "fixing" things with Hijack this! doesn't delete the file, it merely stops the computer from running the task at bootup. It will still be there in the future should you require it.

Now a few tips on prevent future infections.

Safe "Surfing" Tips
——————————-

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immediately attempt to spread themselves to people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Read "How did I get infected in the first place?", here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

6. Keep your Windows and IE up-to-date with all the latest patches and fixes.

"Hardening" Internet Explorer's Defenses
——————————————————–

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Download IE-Spyad here:

http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/main.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

It's been a real pleasure watching those worms go bye-bye :wavey:

Surf safe!!!

GOD bless!!!

M68 :)
Dear Mikah, You are a true friend! Keep up the good work. I shall visit the site at times, and tell my friends about your great site. I have done everything as you suggested, but have not tweaked opware. Thanks for everything, Best of luck.:wavey: Suman Das (UK). :D
