Guys, I think my laptop has the gomyhit.com virus as I keep getting popups from that website. Also, there are a ton of random popups saying that I need different antivirus programs, or that I need to download something becuase my computer has a critical virus on it. I just close out of these popups because they don't seem legit. There are many other symptoms that I've noticed too. My background dissapears almost as soon as I log on and is replaced by a red background with a hazard symbol saying that I have a virus. Also the time displayed on my toolbar is in military (24 hour) time and to the right of the time it reads "virus warning." My control panel is nowhere to be found and when I hit Ctrl,Alt,Del I get a message saying that an administrator has disabled taskmanager (even though I am the administator). Along with control panel, many of my other shortcuts from the Start menu are gone too, such as My Documents, My computer, etc. I don't even see the "Run" option in the start menu. Also there are desktop icons/shortcuts to random software/websites that I've never heard of as well as porn icons :whistling: . I ran several different spyware/malware/adware programs such as spybot and ad-aware. They have indeed helped as the pop-ups have subsided and I can now view taskmanager. But the control panel is still missing, the military time is still there, my background still dissapears (although the red virus background doesn't come up now; the background is just white), and I'm convinced there is still a lot that is wrong with my system. This is my first time dealing with Hijack This so please bear with me:

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
After running those two applications, my symptoms are as follows: my desktop background picture is still being replaced with a white screen almost as soon as I log on. Also, the time on the toolbar is still in military-style 24 hour display. I've also noticed a NEW SYMPTOM that I may have overlooked before: I couldn't get into internet explorer from my desktop! When I click on the desktop icon, rather than open up an IE window, it just creates another icon on the desktop "shortcut to internet explorer." If I go through the start menu, I can indeed get to the internet. I solved this problem by simply dragging the Start menu icon out onto the desktop and deleting the defunc IE shortcut, but I figured I'd let you know in case it can help you solve the problem. Thankfully, pop-ups are now few and far between  . In fact, I haven't seen anything from gomyhit.com in quite some time. The only suspect things that I've seen as far as pop-ups is an occasional message from Windows Security Alert saying that Windows Firewall is trying to block activity, but that I need to enable protection. Then when I click on it, I'm sent to an internet page where I can buy some type of anti-malware program. But even this message is pretty rare now. My latest log is below:

Did you fix everything MBAM found? As you didn't post the scan results I can't tell.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.
Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.
Yes, I did fix what MBAM found, I just forgot to post it. After running Combofix, at least my Start menu is looking normal again. Also, my background showed to the bacground recovery screen now. But when I clicked "restore my active background," it went right back to the all white background. The time is still military time. Here's the Combofix log, and a few lines below that starts the latest HJT log:

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Not much has changed as far as symptoms is concerned. Still have the white background and military time as well. I've noticed that the white background seems to be tied to Windows explorer. For instance, during certain parts of the combofix process when Windows Explorer would shut down (all the toolbars and icons dissapeared), my correct background would show. But when explorer re-launched and all the desktop icons and the toolbar popped back up, the white screen reappeared. Here's the new combofix log, and the HJT log is several lines below that:

To set your time format in Windows XP go to the Start Button then select the Control Panel. In the Control Panel select the Regional and Language Options.

Now select the Customize button in the Standards and formats section, notice the legend for the different time formats on the bottom of the window. Now select the Time tab and then click on the drop down menu arrow next to the Time format box.

Choose the h:mm:ss tt select to change to the default windows format. Then click on Apply or OK.

Next:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

These aren't bad but not needed at startup

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Let me know about your desktop
I did the control panel time adjustment and also deleted the objects that you suggested. The time is now in standard format  . Unfortunately, the background is still missing. Every once in a while I was getting a message saying that a resolution lower than 1200 x 800 was requested, etc. So I went into the control panel, and indeed the video resolution was lower than it should have been (not sure how this happened). So I changed it back to 1200 x 800 resolution, hoping this might have something to do with the background problem, but I didn't have any luck. The background is still white. I also tried switching to a standard Windows background instead of my photo background, but the Windows background doesn't show up either, just a white screen. What's interesting is that when you go to control panel and go to display options where you change the background settings, it does indeed show the background as it should be (in the little "preview window"), but it is not there on the actual desktop. Here's the HJT log:

Do these in safemode and see if one fixes the desktop issue. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen. Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter. This can take several miniutes to load. Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop… > Web tab Select any instances of "Privacy Protection" you find in there and press the delete button on the right. Hit ok below > apply in previous window. 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop. 3. Select Restore Defaults 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop. then click the web tab, then under the web pages to display on your desktop if it has "security" you uncheck this and delete Reboot normal and let me know about the desktop
Didn't see anything with "security" in it, but there was one called "privacy protection" which I unchecked and deleted since this is what I tried to delete in HJT in the last step. The desktop background is still all white.

OK and did this solve the issue?
Did you try this one? 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop. 3. Select Restore Defaults With the all while backgroud is it asking you if you want to restore the desktop?
Yes I tried the restore defaults option, with no luck. No, there is no restore desktop message, just all white. At one point (I believe it was after the first Combofix attempt) there was the restore desktop message, but when I clicked restore, it just went back to the all white screen.
