my notes say "combofix rebooted wiinfdows before producing log" and "log created after reboot". it took less than ten minutes to run as i remember. i copied the logfile out of notepad by using ctrl-A, so it would have copied everything. do you want me to run it again?
Hi :)

Step 1

Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items (if present):

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.

Step 2

Open Notepad (Go to Start > Run, type Notepad and hit Enter), and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::

C:\WINDOWS\system32\trust.dll

Registry::

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{AF4837DA-938C-4864-3BDA-A47284DFCC71}]
Click on File > Save as….

In the File Name box, copy/paste CFScript.txt (Note: Do not change the filename!)

Click Save.

[external image: Posted Image]

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
It will create a log. Be sure to save it to a convenient location.

Step 2

In your next reply, please post:
  • the Combofix log (C:\Combofix.txt)
  • a new HijackThis log
  • How is your computer running now?
hi - computer was terribly sluggish last night for internet usage. had trouble responding to your questions about combofix log, and on other web sites as well. this morning everything is (so far) very good. i notice that my clock disappeared after running combofix today, and lately the two avg products on my system tray need to be double-clicked *twice* to launch them.

scanned with hijackthis, found & fixed the two items on your list.

created text file with your script, and drag&dropped it onto combofix icon on desktop. i checked first to see if the icon was a shortcut; it was not. noticed in properties under security that "this file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer", and the "unblock" button was NOT grayed out.

combofix booted & ran, many lines of text (maybe 100? lots of "step 17, step 18" etc.) scrolling in dos window. computer did not reboot. i had no opportunity to save the log, but c:\combofix\combofix.txt has today's date in it. here it is, followed by a hijackthis log from after the combofix run:

ComboFix 07-11-07.3 - T. Carlberg 2007-11-07 8:17:19.2 - NTFSx86

Hi :)

Please download and run this file: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/zh/CFZip.exe.
It should create a zipfile named _sUBs_.zip on your desktop.

Please upload _sUBs_.zip to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=4:
  • In the Link to topic where this file was requested: box, insert http://forums.whatthetech.com/Small_LG_a_temp_problem_t84851.html
  • Click on Browse… and navigate to _sUBs_.zip, then click Open.
  • Click Send File.
… actually, i neglected to create an account at bleeping computers when i uploaded the file sUBs.zip. so i went back and did it again. should be there now; the site confirmed a successful upload. tom
Hi :) Thanks. A security expert is checking out the file you uploaded, I will let you know when I know more. In the meantime: how is your computer running?
it's actually been performing very well. since i have no hard baseline for a month ago, it seems quite possible that it's running as well as it ever has. avg has been reporting only system restore files, some old winzip.exe files that i neglect to clean out, and a "change" in a file called C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. sometimes it deletes the system restore file, other times it moves it to the vault.
Hi,

I'm sorry for the huge delay, I was waiting for one of the security experts (the developer of Combofix) to look at your log (as you don't seem to be able to run batch files). He is, unfortunately, away for a while, so I'll give you a few prevention tips to stay clean in the future. If you are happy with the way your computer is running, I will lock this topic. If you want the developer to take a look at your case when he returns, I will leave it open. Please let me know what you want :)

You can now delete the following programs:
  • SmitfraudFix
  • SDFix
  • Deckard's System Scanner
  • Combofix
Disable and Enable System Restore - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Step 1: Turn off System Restore:
  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
Step 2: Reboot your computer.

Step 3: Turn on System Restore:
  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
Note: Only do this once, NOT on a regular basis!

Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is very imprtant that you update your anti-virus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti-virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that will come out.

Use a Firewall - Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. The Windows firewall isn't sufficient as it only monitors incoming connections.

Here are a few (free) firewalls, please download and install one of them:
Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install Ad-Aware - Download and install Ad-Aware. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand Up and Be Counted! - Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints: Malware Complaints. You have to be registered to post. After registering just find your country room and register your complaint. The infection you had was Smitfraud.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
