hi - thanks in advance for having a resource like this available. it's been a long time since i've needed expert help.

about three weeks ago i started having problems with file/program launch slowdowns, strange sounds playing themselves at unexpected moments, active programs becoming inactive (title bar greying out until clicked on) spontaneously, and windows explorer security settings changing themselves. about the same time, AVG pro began reporting viruses and trojans during routine scans. avg would report that infected files were deleted or quarantined, but problems continued, and new trojans/viruses would be reported in subsequent scans. this went on for about a week.

i kept restoring browser security settings, and increased the scanning frequency of avg from 1/3 days to every day. problems continued, but after about a week of this, they stopped. no more reset security settings, normal file launch speeds, and no more virus/trojan reports. it's been about six days now, and i wonder if avg has solved the problem? if so why did it take two weeks? am i done with this?

the viruses reported are as follows: JS/Psyme (4), Java/Byte/Verify, Exploit.ANI (1).

trojans are: several varieties of PSW.Generic5.SZK (6), Small.LG (8), DropperSmall.29AL, Downloader.Generic6.QFA (3).

the infected files (now deleted or quarantined), aside from temp internet files, are: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sulimo.dat. this was the target of Small.LG.

the parentheses are how many times the particular piece of malware was found by avg between 22 oct - 28 oct, but is only partial; i emptied the vault on 21 oct.

i'm including the hijackthis.log, since so many of the tips and help pages on this forum suggest it as a starting point, but my real questions (for the moment) are above: has avg solved the problem? if so why did it take two weeks? am i done with this?

again, many thanks.
tom

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

There's still showing an infection in your HijackThis log. Please do the following:

Step 1

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!ri).
  • Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe. A screen will pop up. Select Option 1 (Search) by typing 1 and hit Enter. A text file will appear, which will list the infected files. Save it to a convenient location.
  • The log will also be saved here: C:\rapport.txt
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Step 2

Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Config button.
  • Click on the Misc Tools button.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list… button and save the file to a convenient location. When you press Save, Notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Step 3

In your next reply, please post:
  • the SmitfraudFix log
  • the Uninstall List
  • a new HijackThis log
hi simon - i downloaded smitfraudfix.exe, and launched it. a dos window appeared very briefly, with about 50 characters of text. blink of an eye, gone! after which there was a new folder in the directory with smitfraudfix.exe. folder has about 15 items, all but one are .exe. should i launch one of these? tom
Hi :)

Please double-click on SmitfraudFix.cmd (the only one that isn't a .exe file) inside the SmitfraudFix folder, and follow the instructions in my previous post.
ok done. and the exact same thing happenend. p.s. i checked in C:\ for the file "rapport.txt", but no sign of it. sorry. what does smitfraudfix need to run properly? is the infection preventing its use?
ok done. and the exact same thing happenend. p.s. i checked in C:\ for the file "rapport.txt", but no sign of it. sorry. what does smitfraudfix need to run properly? can it be run from a dos prompt?
Hi :)

We'll use another tool to clean out the infection.

Please print these instructions, or save them to a Notepad document, because you won't have internet access in Safe Mode.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click SDFix.exe, it will extract the files to %systemdrive% (Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix).
  • Reboot your computer in Safe Mode:
    • Go to Start > Shut Down and choose Restart.
    • Just before Windows starts to load, start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe Mode.
    • Login on your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any trojan services and registry entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to reboot.
  • Press any key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the tool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt (Report.txt will also be copied to clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back here, along with the Uninstall List (see my previous post for instructions) and a new HijackThis log.
hi simon - thanks for your quick reply. sdfix had the same performance as smitfraudfix, i.e. *very* brief appearance of a dos window after launching runthis.bat, no reboot prompt, no report.txt file. sorry. what would you like to try now? tom
I'm sorry for the late reply.

First - Please move SmitfraudFix.exe to your Local Hard Drive (C:). To do this, right-click on SmitfraudFix.exe and click Cut. Double-click on My Computer, then double-click Local Hard Drive (C:). Click anywhere, and choose Paste.

Next - Click Start then Run…. Type C:\SmitfraudFix.exe >> C:\output.txt in the runbox and click OK.

We'll use another tool to get a better view on what's going on.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, Deckard's System Scanner will open two Notepad files: main.txt and extra.txt - please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply, along with the contents of C:\output.txt.
hi simon - smitfraudfix.exe run using a dos prompt, with the file located in C:\, performed as usual, i.e. no apparent result. it did, however, create the output.txt file, which was empty.

previously you had said that smitfraud would create a file called rapport.txt; when i looked for results from smitfraud in the earlier trials, i did not look for output.txt, which may in fact have been there.

dss.exe ran as you advised me. here are the results:

Hi :)

i did not look for output.txt

The previous runs won't have created output.txt, it was running this specific command that created it: C:\SmitfraudFix.exe >> C:\output.txt.

Did you run SDFix in Safe Mode?

Step 1

Click on Start, then Control Panel. Double click on Add or Remove Programs.

Please remove the following program(s):
  • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Step 2

Please disable AVG Anti-Spyware Resident Shield, as it may interfere with the fix.
  • Double-click on the AVG Anti-Spyware icon in your system tray (next to your clock).
  • Under Status, click on Change state, next to Resident shield (this will change from Active to Inactive).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.
Note: Be sure to enable AVG Anti-Spyware Resident Shield when you are clean!

Step 3

Please download ATF Cleaner. Double-click on ATF-Cleaner.exe to start the program.
  • Under the Main tab, put a check next to Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button. (Note: if you remove cookies, automated login at forums and sites will be disabled. If you do not want this, uncheck Cookies)
  • If you use the Firefox browser:
Click on Firefox at the top and put a check next to Select All.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.
Click the Empty Selected button. (Note: if you remove cookies, automated login at forums and sites will be disabled. If you do not want this, uncheck Cookies)
  • If you use the Opera browser:
Click on Opera at the top and put a check next to Select All.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.
Click the Empty Selected button. (Note: if you remove cookies, automated login at forums and sites will be disabled. If you do not want this, uncheck Cookies)
Step 4

Please download Combofix:Double-click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Save it to a convenient location.

Note: Do not mouseclick Combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Step 5

In your next reply, please post:
  • the log from Combofix (C:\Combofix.txt)
  • a new HijackThis log
  • whether you ran SDFix in Safe Mode
hi simon - re:output.txt - i understand

yes, i ran sdfix in safe mode.

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 has been removed.

avg anti-spyware was disabled per your most recent instructions; since i am continuing to use my computer, i re-enabled it after the current hijackthis run.

i downloaded & ran atf cleaner

downloaded & ran combofix. log follows. thanks! good to see the programs run for a change.

Was that everything inside of the Combofix log? If so, how long did it take to run it? Did it restart your computer? Did you let it run until the logfile appeared on your screen?

I'm sorry for all the questions, but I need those answers to really see what's going on.
my notes say "combofix rebooted wiinfdows before producing log" and "log created after reboot". i copied the logfile out of notepad by using ctrl-A, so it would have copied everything. do you want me to run it again?
