Dave: some key I mistakenly typed suddenly may already sent a partial message. If not here's the gist. I am away and can't undertake a new scanning program until I return when I will email you again. Thanks for your help so far. The Krapersky halts with one virus and a few other less threatening objects showing. Have a good Thanksgiving. Peter
Hi Peter,

No problem. I'll give you another scanner to try when you get a chance.

Lets run an F-Secure online scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:
  • Go to http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
  • Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
  • Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
  • If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
  • When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
  • Click Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
Notes:
  • This scan will only work with Internet Explorer
  • You must have administrator rights to run this scan
  • This scan can take several hours, so please be patient
Yes, probably tomorrow I will be in shape to undertake the next step and use the new scan software. Thanks for keeping me on your list. Somehow I have acquired a cold/virus which is taking some time to abate. Will forward results when available. Peter
Well I cheated Dave. I couldn't face running a looooonnnng scan again so I unchecked submit samples and copied the report. Here it is. I hope it indicates a clean/cleaner laptop. And I wonder if I should remove the other malware searchers you have shown me both from the desktop and the computer. Don't they conflict. I also have a subscription, which came with the computer, for Norton. Norton didn't seem to be able to catch/prevent any of these intrusions. What is your opinion of keeping it? Well I do go on. OK, as it has been a few weeks I believe since you last posted a HijackThis log can you post a fresh one to review. Also, please let me know how it's running now. You can remove the Smitfraudfix tool and any associated files/folders.
Dave: I have just been too sick to go online and do the highjack this scan. I will probably today. On another subject, my tower PC has Spyware Terminator resident and shows no malware present. Should I run a Hijack This scan to make sure? Several times Spyware Terminator has challenged online sites' running 'doubleclick' as dangerous and asks whether to allow or block. One of them is my bank [!], a site I have been using for a few years.I have allowed sites I have previously used. Have i done a dumb thing? AND there are still icons on my desktop for ATP-cleaner, and AVG anti-virus. Should I remove them? Sorry to leave you hanging. Peter
What is Spyware Terminator finding? Just cookies? Many times these scanners flag cookies as malware but they are not. It's up to you whether or not you want to keep ATFCleaner and AVG. I use both of them about once a week to clean up temp files, ect… and Spyware scans. Just post another HJT log whenever you get a chance just to make sure everything is OK. Take care, Dave
OK, here it is. I will also download this program and see if the PC upstairs is clean . I assume I will see a red flag on the log? Thanks again for all of your help. I am not as patient as you. My wife received an inhouse message that the number of viruses has increased almost exponentially. True?

Peter

HJT looks ok….do you use the crawler toolbar? It's not malicious but is "questionable". If you use it fine…if not I would uninstall it using Add or Remove Programs.

My wife received an inhouse message that the number of viruses has increased almost exponentially. True?

Not quite sure what you mean by "inhouse", sorry. Do you mean viruses overall prevalence? I don't know in terms of quantity. They are much more sophisticated and harmful, as they can steal information and try to pilfer money out of unsuspecting/uneducated users.
By inhouse I mean at my wife's workplace. An IT sent a message to many in the office warning of an increase in both number and maliciousness of viruses/worms. Thanks for looking at the scan. I do NOT like the crawler toolbar and am glad to hear I can remove it. IF I can navigate the WhattheTech site I plan to make a donation to continue the good work. Thanks again. I guess that this is goodbye. Peter
That is what I figured you meant.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

Install Ad-Aware - Ad-Aware SE You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Use IESpy-Ad -
IESpy-Ad will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the website.
