It this a particularly difficult virus to remove? I have downloaded Spyware Terminator. When setting the parameters of a scan there is no way to include viruses. However I persevered using the full scan option, and found plenty to remove. I think that I did some good removal, but occasionally a full screen appears with 'Trusted Protection" asking to scan the system. I resist. I should also relate that there is a version of Norton resident. It sometimes will abort while running a complete scan. I am sure that my knowledge is scanty about viruses. Is there a program that end users can trust? I do appreciate any response which clarifies this subject. Peter Lister
Hi and welcome to the forums. Sorry for the delay in getting to you post here.

We need a HijackThis log to analyze your issue. Please read through and follow the instructions in the "Welcome New Memebers" post here.

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/Welcome_New_Members_t34502.html

And to answer your question, yes there are good, reputable programs out there that you can trust. I can recommend some once we get a look at what's going on.

Regards,
Dave
Dave: Thank you for replying at all. I am unable to give this laptop the attention that it requires. My Dell tower seems to be protected by Spyware Terminator because it allows a full WITH virus scan. The version that downloaded to the laptop does not include that ability. This morning I am trying to see if I can download a full version of that and run it before I delve into the "hijack this" mode, which is daunting to me. So far the scan with the partial scan mode of ST shows only fragments of Zlob and Gave?? remaining. If I am unable to download and run it I will try your suggestion. Thank you again for extending a hand. Peter
Hi Peter, Your welcome. I can guide you through running HijackThis step by step if you need. That's not a problem. If it's Zlob then it's likely a Smitfraud infection, to which most of the regular tools will not completely clean. But there is a special tool for cleaning it called, appropriately, Smitfraudfix. But I would need to see a HJT report to verify that. Let me know how you make out when you get a chance. Dave
Dave: Strangely one of the most difficult and frustrating things is trying to find this area to respond to you. When I go directly to What the Tech and sign in I still can't find you. However if this works by going through the gmail response so be it. As i said I am unsure about Hijack This, but tonight I will investigate that site. What I have are two computers now with downloaded Spyware Terminator. The tower PC with the 'complete' program seems to work well and has removed various items. Once it was necessary to go into Safe Mode to accomplish a removal of a worm, but that's OK. The laptop download does not include full scan with virus, but the other does. I have deleted, and quickly re-downloaded the program with the same result. I do not know, but suspect that something resident is preventing the complete version from being downloaded. I have a 'ticket' from the support staff at Spyware Terminator and propose to ask them what to do about this tonight as well. After I get a response from them and know more about the Hijack This site I will be in a better position to ask you for help. This may take a day or two so I hope you will check back in when I am ready. This current site is labyrinthine to me. Peter
No problem. I get email notifications when you post so I will know when you do. You should be getting the same and be able to get to your thread here that way, that's the easiest. If you do lose the email then the next easiest is go to "My Controls" link near the top right of the page. Then about half way down on the left under "Subscriptions" you can click "View Topics". Then you should see the link to your topic. This place is huge, so navigation is sometimes a challenge but once you get used to it then it becomes easier.
Dave: I have looked at Hijack this and it's a marvel. I am too newbie to dip into it. I have found that on IE a strange toolbar appears that I have always treated as a threat and just Googled it. The search seemed to indicate it was a baddie, and offered an automatic removal download for it from something called pconline? as well as a manual removal. I certainly wouldn't want to start to do that by hand. Do you think this automatic is real and useable? Toolbar 7.1 does not display in Mozilla. I always look forward to your responses. And am I being cautious enough? Peter
OK, now I am a little perplexed. You refer to a Highjack log. What I found on the site referred to a myriad of different problems in spyware/viruses, and an admonition that if you didn't understand what you were doing to stay out and don't mingle. What would I find and where would I look on my laptop for a file to vet if that is what you require? I have described the toolbar that seems to be a virus, but did not find a reference to in on the Highjack site. I have run a complete scan with Spyware Terminator, but without the VIRUS scan indicated in the scan type selection have little confidence that is has been able to locate the badware. A response from Spyware Terminator did not address the problem of re-installing the program to ensure the importation of the full scan with virus feature. They only repeat that I uninstall and reinstall. So Dave, I am living up to newbieness. I am now going to look in the Hijack Logs and Removal section to see if any explanations occur there. Peter.
I am beyond dumb. Hijack This is a program [?] that I download and run to check the systems and registries currently on my laptop. [?] My slowness is somewhat caused by not downloading anything not recommended. I guess that I have been by a previous helper who sent me here, so I will email the instructions upstairs to print them and start that process. Sorry to be so clueless. Peter

Hijack This is a program [?] that I download and run to check the systems and registries currently on my laptop. [?]

Yes, HijackThis will not fix anything by itself. It will simply show us what may be going on here. If something is found I will guide you step by step through the removal. But I need to see the log posted here. If you have someone to help you get that great. Try not to get to analytical with this. Just post the HJT log and I will guide you. There are instructions in the link I gave you earlier. If you need help with posting the HJT log let me know.

Dave
You are so polite. Thanks. Here goes!

Nice job  You appear to have a smitfraud infection, very common these days. Run option #1 on the Smitfraudfix tool to confirm this. If it is present then I will post cleaning instructions. Let me know if you have any questions.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
