Hi shall,

Sorry for the delay and sorry to hear you paid a guy 150 bucks to blow the dust out of your PC and replace a 5 dollar fan, ughh.

Was it the fan that was causing the noise? Even if the PC is overheating that wouldn't cause it to run slowly, as you probably know. It would likely just lock it up.

Not seeing anything malicious at first glance. I do see Norton/Symantec, and their products are renowned for slowing down PC's. How much RAM do you have?

There are a few items at startup that could be disabled. You could use msconfig to at least temporarily disable some to see if that helps. I would also recommend some cleanup if you haven't already done so.

Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files,
cookies, cache, ect…

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Try that and see if it helps. Let me know,
Dave
Thanks Dave. I don't even think he put a new fan in. He told my wife that since we had a Dell 4700C that it was a smaller machine and having to work harder. Funny thing is it didn't start getting this loud till a few months ago. I ran the ATP but it still seems loud. I don't have FireFox or Opera. Any other suggestions? It's pretty bad when you can hear the computer running and your sitting in the other room down the hallway. Thanks for your help!

He told my wife that since we had a Dell 4700C that it was a smaller machine and having to work harder.

The guy didn't know what he was talking about and just took a quick buck. Is this guy from a local shop or repair center? If it were me I would bring it back there and ask to speak to whomever is in charge. Explain this guy did nothing but blow out the case for $150. I would demand either a refund or fix the problem, for nothing. But I'm pretty demanding sometimes with these kinds of things myself.

If the noise is coming from the fan that isn't necessarily a bad thing. At least it's running, annoying yes. And a good indication that it will die eventually, and probably soon. Then you have problems. If the PC doesn't shut itself down it will self destruct. Meaning the CPU will likely overheat and die.

But all of this likely has nothing to do with the performance issue. I asked this last post, how much RAM do you have on this machine?
I don't believe this is malware but let's run a spyware scan.

You probably have 512mb of RAM. Sometimes it reports less. You should be OK with that. I think one of your main issues is Norton. Are you still getting updated virus definitions? If so for how much longer?

How are things running at this point? We haven't really done much here, just some cleanup. Are things any better?

If you like I can advise on some of the items you have running at startup that can be disabled and may perk things up. Also, I can advise some free, good antivirus solutions that will take much less resources than Norton does. Let me know on those.

Here are some links also that may have some ideas for increasing performance.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/s…estoreperf.mspx
http://tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks1.htm

Some of the ideas may be redundant. Let me know on the startup items and if you do decide to remove Norton. Norton can be VERY difficult to completely remove from computers. It is known for this, and even has created special uninstallers for their products. My question to them….why not design these into the product in the first place??? but that's an argument for another day I guess.
Yes, it probably would speed things up a little by taking some of the startup items out. You could use msconfig to play around with it. Then HJT if you want them permanently disabled.

Also, if your Norton is expiring and you want to go to a free solution here are a couple of ideas. They will all use less resources than Norton. AVG AntiVirus - Free
Avast Antivirus Home Version–Free
Antivir Personal - Free

NOTE: Norton can be difficult to remove completely. If there are stray remnants or if it just won't go here is a link to their removal tools:

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
