I stuffed up and downloaded RiyoCodec . Would like your assisstance at removal.

My OS is Windows Vista Premium. I havn't noticed anything odd happening since i have it, but when i did a scan using Ad-Ware Lavasoft it picked up some malware but was unable to delete it. Tried using fixwareout but says window version is unsupported. I've run atf cleaner fine.

When i did run hijackthis it came up with a error stating :-

*For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, Hijackthis may not be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click start, Run type:

Notepad "C:\windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts"

and press enter. Find the lins(s) Hijackthis reports and delete them. Save the file as "hosts" (with Quotes), and reboot

I do this and restart but comes up with it again aswell as stating its error #75 - Path/File access error. I continued after this and can get a report :-

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

• I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
• The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
• Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
• It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.

Yes, unfortunately many of the tools we use to clean malware are not "technically" supporting Vista. Although I have seen Smitfraudfix used successfully and you have already run the scan and it confirmed Smitfraud is present. I would recommend just continuing with the fix.

NOTE: Also, HJT has been updated to better support Vista. Can you download and use the new version when you post back with a new log.

Step 1: Download AVG Anti-Spyware
Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

• Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
• Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
• On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
  • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
  • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
  • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
  • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
• Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
• Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.
IMPORTANT! Do not scan yet with AVG Anti-Spyware! We will do this later.

Step 2: Delete Temp Files
Please download ATF Cleaner here by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only.
It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources. It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, and detects the browsers you have and grays out the other(s).

• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
• Under Main choose: Select All
• Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
• Click the Empty Selected button.
  
  If you use Firefox browser
• Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
• Click the Empty Selected button.
  NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  
  If you use Opera browser
• Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
• Click the Empty Selected button.
• NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step 3: Boot into Safe Mode
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

• If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
• Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
• Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
• Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
• Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
• Login on your usual account.

Step 4: Run SmitfraudFix
Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Step 5: Run AVG Anti-Spyware
Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.

• Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
• Click on the Settings tab.
  • Under How to act?
    • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
  • Under How to scan?
    • All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Possibly unwanted software:
    • All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Reports:
    • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
  • Under What to scan?
    • Select Scan every file.
• Click on the Scan tab.
• Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
• Let the program scan the machine.
• When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
  IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
  • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
  • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
    
• When done, click the Save Scan Report button. (4)
  • Click the Save Report as button.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
• Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

Step 6: Reboot your computer
It'll automatically switch to Normal Mode.

Step 7: Post logs
Please post:

• c:\rapport.txt
• AVG log
• Fresh HijackThis log

Your may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

I have followed all your steps and on the final reboot to go back to normal mode my background has changed. Is this normal to happen?? Havn't noticed anything else different at the moment.

Yes, that happens when removing the infection. You should be able to set it back to whatever you want through the normal process. Let me know if you need help with that.

Yes, still some cleanup. There are a couple of malware BHO's that may also be installed as programs.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: ADSTechnology module - {831CBAC0-8283-4653-9D81-FEB9F3F6E47C} - C:\Program Files\ADSTechnology\ADSTechnology.dll

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked

Then go into Control Panel and choose Uninstall a Program under Programs. Look for those 2 programs and remove if found.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3.

• Go to http://java.sun.com/...loads/index.jsp
• Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3
• Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
• Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
• Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
• Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
• Reboot your computer
• Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
• Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
• Reboot your computer

Are there any programs you would recomend to help prevent this?

I will post some suggestions when we're done. One thing I noticed though is you use P2P file sharing, Napster. This far and away is the most common way to get infected. Probably 9 out of 10 people who come here for help I see have P2P and are likely infected that way. So I would avoid it in the future, but it's your computer.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

To turn off Windows Vista System Restore:

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on
7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
8. Click OK
9. When you have finished, restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

To turn on Windows Vista System Restore:

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
6. Place a checkmark in the box for any drive you wish to enable System Restore on

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

IESpy-Ad will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the website.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
