Hello,
I hope you can help me.
I am running XP Pro, and AVG7.5
Everything is running well, except the task bar. Everything from 'start' to the clock seems not to respond when I put the pointer over them. If any application is minimized, it appears on the task bar, but there is no action when the pointer is placed on it.
I've looked on many sites and not found anything similar.
A week or so ago my son (who lives in Paris, not in UK, so cannot help) changed my AVG scans to do a complete scan once a month instead of everyday, but the usual scans are still run at switch on. Nothing else seems to be wrong.
Hope you can help, please.
cheers

From what you describe, it sounds like you believe that the AVG 7.5 running a Full System Scan is causing too much of a load and therefore "lagging" any other application responsiveness.
Am I understanding that correctly?
It's possible.
You can safely "pause" or "stop" the AVG scan from AVG Test Center.
Then try out your other open applications from your task bar.
It would be better to run full system virus scans when you are not using other applications.
Maybe at night, or after you've finished using the machine for the day.
Best Regards
seems I've sorted the problem. There was a programme running in the background (called lnCD.exe) which would not stop, even when instructed, and I had to do a shut off from the button. Seems the computer didn't like this. I found the keyboard button between the Ctrl key and the Alt key gave me the 'Start button' functions, so I was able to turn off the computer as normal. When I re-booted, all seemed well.
thanks to anyone who may be pondering a reply
cheers

Nero's InCD is a resource hog and useful only with Re-Writable CD-RW. (a practice that really never caught on for me)
Nero burning tools are good quality in general, but I almost always disable InCD from starting at BootTime.
You can safely disable InCD via MSCONFIG - StartUp(tab) - by removing the checkmark/tick from in front of the item.

I had the below reply ready when I was interrupted. I am glad I checked preview before posting as I then saw you sorted the problem out. Thanks for replying.
Rather than deleting all, I will leave my reply for reference.

I don't understand why he would change it to once a month. I use AVG and it updates (if updates are available) and scans every night with no problem - and that's on 8 systems. Are you saying the problem started right after he did that? If so, and it was only a week ago, you might try a System Restore to a time before he made any changes. Sadly, this could be an indication of malware infestation. Besides AVG for viruses, have you scanned for spyware?
So, when you hover over the icons, they are not highlighted and there are no text bubble boxes showing the titles? What happens if you click on one? How do you maximize the program again? I too am unable to find any information on this. Does it do it every time with every program?
I would suggest you check out Kellys-Korner and scroll down to item 164. Also from Kellys-Korner is her Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! that may be worth a try.
Well, that's my first love - I still have my set of Acoustic Research AR-3a speaker systems - my first real audiophile quality speakers I bought in the early 70s. That said, there are some audiophile quality sound cards (check out the M-Audio Revolution 7.1) that when connect to a good set of speakers will offer some great sounds - that set up won't rival a $10,000 home stereo system, but if you don't expect it to, no problems.
