I am running windows xp sp2 and have lost my system sounds. I have tested sounds with the diagnostic tool and it failed sound 1 and sound 2 with the error message "HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code) It also failed all the music files. Here is info on my sound system. Wost case scenario you have a bad sound card.

Lets go ahead and make sure all your hardware is registered and according to Windows working correctly.

To do that go into device manager.

Click on Start.
Click on Run.
Type in devmgmt.msc and press enter.

Do you see any X,yellow ! ,or ?
