[Resolved] Trojan giving me fits

Last week I was in a site checking on my daughters visit to Egypt and must have pick up a bad file. I was getting messages that windows files have been overlaid and to insert my windows disk. Dell never sent me the disks so I called tech support and they ordered them for me.
In the meantime they suggested that I clear out my startup menu using msconfig which I did and rebooted.
This helped a lot and the messages stopped. I now have only 2 items in the start menu - CTFMON and POINT32
I use McAfee and it was picking up a Trojan called "Downloader-BEW" but as of that date they had no info on it. They just released an update though which I now have and when I run my scan it finds and repairs the problem, but it keeps coming back.

McAfee suggests I use my backup to restore the start items but woes is me the file wasn't created.
They also suggest turning off my restore and rebooting and then turning it back on and rebooting again. Apparently the Trojan is sitting in the C:\system volume information folder and they believe clearing the restore points will delete the file.
Another problem is that the Trojan created a file called ABC123.exe and I'm wondering if that should be deleted also.

My system appears to be running fine and if this can be cleaned up I'll create a proper backup. I'm wary of reinstalling windows XP if this can't be fixed.

Hello and welcome to the forums

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.


(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick while its running. That may cause it to stall

Another update When I created the cfscript.txt file I didn't use the upper case for CFS and hope the program wasn't case sensitive. If so I can run it again using CFScript.txt instead of cfscript.txt One more thing. McAfee had another release around 10/8-10/9 which removed the downloader_BEW which kept returning. I also checked just now for the ABC123.pid file(I mistakenly called it ABC123.exe) and cannot find it and assume McAfee cleared that also. I apologize for my errors and hope this wont slow you down. If it's not too much trouble can you give me a laymans overview on what is happening Jack

Little clean-up

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
    (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
    Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
    I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
    Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
    This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
    If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
    until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
    This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
    You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
    Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

Hi All the items have been completed. Clean restore point, hidden files now ok and internet options ok. I normally keep up to date with all Microsoft updates and only a few days ago got the latest. I also keep up to date with McAfee and look for updates about every other day and usually have a scheduled scan weekly and a manual scan sometimes after receiving updates. I also do a system defrag occasionally but I don't have much on my 160Gig drive. I will do the backup sometime this evening. I have a 2 gig memory stick I'll use. I have most of my files there now. My system seems to be running well in fact I have had no apparent problems or glitches. Shutdown is fine (no missing dll's)and my internet security is up to date also. When I first discovered my problem I called Dell for the disks and they also took control of my system looking for obvious problems. (Citrix download) This was done twice and the second time a tech guy changed some of my IE7 defaults. Tabbed browser which I use frequently for a work at home job and the space IE7 uses for web pages. I can live with the latter but I changed the former back to my original settings. I am also running with limited start up items and so far I haven't had a problem. Some of these Items did annoy me like music match which I don't use and google desktop. Kodak picture transfer will be removed since I have another camera and different software. So, unless you discover a serious problem I guess we can close this item. One last thing, I really appreciate having this service in case of problems. You guys do a terrific job and I know quite a few work full time jobs and do this as volunteers. I have recommended this to anyone I hear has a problem. Thanks again Jack
