Webroot Spysweeper 5.5.7.48
Firefox 2.0.0.7

Symptoms:
Popups from explorer
Spysweeper quits
"Invalid Point Operation" window on startup
sometimes wireless seems to be connected, but webpages will not load
Spysweeper quarantines, but the malware keeps coming back--even without internet connection
crackling sound from speakers (may be unrelated)

I go by FencerGirl. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

• The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Hi brdwlsh,
We're going to need some prep work then do a bit of cleaning. While we're cleaning your computer, please do not use BitTorrent.

First, you aren't running Anti Virus Software. Please download and install one of them first!!!

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Download just one of these free anti-virus programs, update it and run a full scan. Have it fix anything it finds.

Second, we need to rename HijackThis.exe to reveal.exe
Use My Computer (Windows Explorer) to go to the HiJackThis folder
In your case, the HiJackThis folder is: C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\
(double click C:, then double click Program Files, then double click the HijackThis folder)
In the top menu, click View, Details
Right button-click on the file named HijackThis.exe and select Rename.
Type in the new filename as reveal.exe
Hit <Enter> and close MyComputer

Third, we need to download and run VundoFix.
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

After you've completed all of the above steps, please post back with thre results from VundoFix (vundofix.txt) and a new HijackThis log (remember, we renamed it reveal.exe!)

thank you for the response fencergirl. the crackling/popping audio i mentioned earlier seem to be a Dell issue. i've recently read about a lot of other people with this problem. i do have webroot spysweeper, it may not have been running at the time that i ran the hijackthis app. one of the symptoms i am experiencing is that spysweeper quits. anyway, i followed step one and downloaded the second option (the one with the red umbrella icon). i ran the sweep and saved the log. i then restarted my laptop. i immediately got a 'detection' window for the conhook trojan. i selected the 'move to quarantine' radio button and clicked OK. 5 seconds later the same window appeared, i repeated my action. this happened at least a dozen times and i even selected the other radio button options. i gave up and left the window open while i was preparing the original (now gone) version of this email. my computer powered down by itself. I am now unable to boot up. I have (had?) a Dell Inspiron E 1505, the numlock led is steady green, the caps lock and scroll lock led's are flashing green. i believe this to be a Dell issue as i have been reading about other people with this issue. it seems that there is a memory (RAM) problem and it requires servicing. i appreciate your inputs but there is no further action i can take. if, by chance, i get this piece of junk working again i will repost a thread in this forum, and reference this thread. suffice it to say i will not be buying another dell--ever again.

Hi brdwlsh, I'm sorry to hear that your computer situation has gone from bad to worse. Will your computer boot up at all? Or does it just sit there and look at you? won't start up. maybe you can help me find instructions on how to 'reseat the memory' in my dell e1505. at this point i'm not afraid to open it up and look inside, but i would feel more comfortable with some instructions. thanks again.
