Unless you have the spare cash to shell out for a top-of-the-line system, Vista's performance will be mediocre. System requirements for Vista are double that for XP. I believe XP runs much faster on its minimum requirements than Vista does. There are pretty detailed benchmarks and comparisons available that may help in your decision. You'll also have to choose an edition of Vista that suits your needs, with only the most expensive having all the cool features activated.

You might also want to check out Night of the Living Vista (and no, it's not about an upcoming horror flick).

My recommendation: stick to XP until Vista gets a couple service packs under its belt and better driver support.

Regards,

Ax

I bought a new laptop in July with Windows Vista - I didn't get a choice of operating systems but thought it would be okay. I work as an IT contractor from home and none of my clients programs were compatible with Windows Vista. I bought a mouse for the laptop and even that wasn't compatible. In the end I went hunting for a new laptop since I was about to lose out some serious money if I couldn't get something that would connect me with the client. Now I'm in a relatively small town in Australia, and my client is in the UK. When I went around the 6 or so computer shops that we have the story was all the same - they had run out of XP laptops because people wanted to replace their vista laptops until vista was seen to be up to scratch. One vendor told me that he was telling businesses to stay away from Vista for another 6 months at least. Luckily I found an XP laptop so now I'm happy and so is my client in the UK. Regards, Karen

Hi Kaz101,

I concur with all you say - I am also in Australia, had a new Laptop built for me by Pioneer Computers recently with XP/SP2 from HERE

I decided with the top of the range with guidance from a respected techie whom I know well. I am very pleased with it.

I couldn't agree more with Ax238 with his posting in this thread also. Keep clear of Vista as I see too many problems with it from my Son in Law down.

kind regards,

Am I the only one who remembers the change over from win98 to XP?

The shouting and hollering about hardware that would no longer work, applications that would not transfer? I ended up having to buy a new document scanner and cd burning program and stop using all of those dos based programs I had been dragging along from the 3.1 days. I still have those machines around here somewhere...

In perspective Xp has been around for how long now? Maybe six or seven years and they still are releasing updates and patches? How many service packs? How many questions on a daily basis do we see on my hardware will not work, this application crashes, I cant get on the internet.....all on XP machines yet?

Yeah patches and drivers and configurations are a way of life in computing, Every second tuesday.... But are you not amazed that these boxes work at all and things we do with em? They have become televsion broadcast studios, Phone companies, Record studios, post offices, Radio stations, Movie theaters... oh yeah I forgot data bases and work processing devices.

Well we all could move to MAC's and pay 200 bucks each time there is a "update", or get stuck only buying the Official Apple gear at three times the price. You didnt want to play Games anyway right? Thats why they made game consoles....oops. Me bad.

It is going to happen, XP will be phased out. Whether Vista is an intermediate step to the proposed Windows seven.

We want so much out of these boxes these days that they are not designed for. A pc will play DVD's yes? But hands down a REAL DVD console runs rings around them. But does a terrible job typing up a resume. A pc will play games, but consoles have an advantage being its sole purpose in life, but does not do a thing for my spreadsheet.

Me I guess I will go sit in my corner and play with my old low tech Etch-a-sketch and when I have a problem I will just turn it upside down and shake...Factory fresh.

Two knobs of uncomplicated goodness. You just cant beat a classic!

What? Say it aint so! :wall: They went and made a computer version of that too. Etch A Sketch Online

Is nothing sacred? (note turn your speakers down before you go there) Why cant they just leave things alone? Progress who needs it

Yes, New versions and swanky new operating systems will keep on being released, but it is still possble to buy new machines with XP installed. Or you can build one yourself or get a chum to build one for you and then you can choose your operating system. So like most things its your call. Service Pack 1 for Vista is due for release in the new year and this may solve a few problems....could cause a few, as well I guess!! Regards paws

Yes, without giving away where I work, you can still get new computers with XP on them. You have to specifically ask for them.

The sales department can not ask you if you want a XP machine, or not allowed tell you they have XP machines availible. This is the only way Microsoft will let us sell them. We can not market nor qualify a customer for them. Microsoft is serious about moving you on to Vista.

The other thing is that the restore media included with these xp machines are vista restore media. So if you restore with them with the media, surprise you get Vista.
The machines that are set this way are the "Business class" machines running XP pro and up.

Yep, we all know all of XP service packs never caused instability. I remember the hollering about that too. Remeber the pledges of " I am never going to update my XP to service pack fill in the blank because it will break my installation." With topics like "The Dark side of service pack 2" Or "Service pack 2 do or dont" on the net.

Cant buy a Os install disk with XP on it without service pack 2 on it these days.

Regards

Kaz
