[Closed] Symantec and the Vundo.Trojan War

I have store bought HP PC. XP SP2 and Symantec Anti-virus is installed. The Anti-virus software states that the virus is on the PC. However, the software is unable to quaritine or clean it. Off to the Symantec site for removal instructions. After actively completing the instructions for this virus , it some how resurrects itself. At this point, I'm thinking my PC has be hacked !!! The file that is infected is "ddcddd.dll" ( or somehing like it ).

Next, I attempted to install "Spybot - Search and Destroy". In the middle of the install the installation window just disappeared. After multiple attempts. I decided to come to the forum for HELP :( :( :( Please take a look at my log file. Let me know what you find ………

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
You appear to have one of the Vundo varients that hides from HJT, plus quite a few other unwanted guests. We need to rename HJT so we can see the Vundo.
  • Go to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
  • Rename HijackThis.exe to FredFlintstone.exe
  • Run a new scan with HJT (FredFlintstone) and send me the new log please.
Can you also send me an Uninstall list please.

Creating an Uninstall List
  • Open HJT, and click on Config, followed by Misc Tools.
  • Click on Open Uninstall Manager, and then click on Save List.
  • This will create a file uninstall_list.txt and prompt you to save it to your HJT folder.
  • Save it please and post it back here.

This is the 2nd log you have posted in the last couple of days. Please explain.

Hi kawgirl96,

OK, lets get started.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following.

Viewpoint Media Player

Next

Disable Spybot S&D Teatimer (if activated) as it may interfere with removing things.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Then
  • Download combofix.exe by sUBs
  • Alternate Download
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HJT log. (it can also be found at C:\Combofix.txt)
IMPORTANT
  • Do not use your computer while Combofix is running.
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
There will be more to do after I've seen the returned logs.

Ok….Let me rephase the last question……..


Spybot does not function at all. So, I can't disable Tea Timer and to go into Advance Mode.

Any suggestions to this issue ?


Also, do I continue to combofix.exe eventhough I am unable to use configure spybot ?
