I am working on a PC that has been getting all kinds of pop-ups and now it is disabling the Symantec AV 10.1.7. I have to leave the CD in the drive to keep it running. SAV has found, cleaned or quarantined jkhhe.exe and a couple of TMP files. It has also found problems in some system restore files.

I have downloaded and installed Hijack This and below is the log file. I do not see any problems, but I am not sure what exactly to look for either.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hello mikevb01 and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Regards,

Trevuren
Hi Trevuren, I am at work right now, but when I get home (around 4:30 CST) I will download and run the util and then post the results for it and a new HJT. Mike
Hey, Trevuren: I've downloaded and ran the combofix and re-ran HJT. Below are the log files. Thanks for your help.

Mike

It appears likely that your system has been infected with a Vundo trojan file infector. This trojan renames legitimate startup executables and replaces them with malware. We will attempt to reverse the process but please be advised that most often, there are one or two programs that can not be salvages and will need to be reinstalled. Unfortunately part of your ComboFix.txt log appears to be missing. Please run the tool again and post the new ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis.log
Here are the files. This is all they generated. The first time I ran combofix, it created an infected/quarantine report, but it was gone after the second run. Hope this helps.

Mike

It appears likely that your system has been infected with a Vundo trojan file infector. This trojan renames legitimate startup executables and replaces them with malware. We will attempt to reverse the process but please be advised that most often, there are one or two programs that can not be salvaged and will need to be reinstalled.

A. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe //ICWLaunch
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] sttray.exe
    O18 - Filter hijack: text/xml - {807563E5-5146-11D5-A672-00B0D022E945} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\OFFICE12\MSOXMLMF.DLL
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqqomj - ssqqomj.dll (file missing)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

B. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

KillAll::
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

[external image: Posted Image]

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

6. ComboFix will automatically REBOOT your machine when the KillAll:: switch is used..

7. Next, re-enable all the programs that you disabled prior to running ComboFix.

8. Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
OK, mission accomplished. Sorry for the delay. I uninstalled the SAV and SpyBot when I ran the ComboFix script. I have reinstalled the AV

Here are the logs as requested.

B. Fixing this terrible infection must be followed up by the following scan which takea about one hour, perhaps more, depending on the size of your drive.

Please use the Internet Explorer browser, and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Choose "Global" from the drop down menu at the top of the page.
Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
[external image: Posted Image]
[external image: Posted Image]
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log

Please also tell me how your system is currently running.

Trevuren
Hi Trevuren,

I have completed the Kasperski scan as requested and also the HJT. The outputs are below. As for how the PC is running, it seems to be better. There have not been any unwanted pop-ups the entire time I had the PC connected to the Internet. It also did not give any errors saying that it could not access a requested web site (due to the fact that I did not connect the PC to my router).

Congratulations, your logs look CLEAN. A few items in your System Restore Cache but we will be taking care of those during the following procedures. If there are no problems reaching sites when not using the router, that means that it is either a router or a Windows problem and it is not malware related which is a very good thing. If you notice the problem resurfacing once reconnected to the router, please open a new topic in the Windows Forum and mention to them at the beginning that you have been cleared through the Malware Forum. You should try all functions of your Antivirus, as soon as possible. If anything does not seem right, reinstall the software and definitions immediately.

There are a few things you must do once you system is completely clean:

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

  • [external image: Posted Image]

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Update your Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

4. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

5. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

6. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

7. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?
Thanks for the help. I have run the combofix /u. Windows is set to auto-download updates. Symantec AV Corporate 10.1.7 is installed and I've configured it to autoupdate and scan the drive daily. But, I am a little confused. The Kasperski virus scan found 3 viruses and 9 infected files. What did we do to remove those issues? Also, why didn't SAV find them? Thanks again. Mike

A few items in your System Restore Cache but we will be taking care of those during the following procedures

These were deleted when you cleaned out your system restore cache. As to why Symantec did not find them, that is a question for them I guess.

Regards,

Trevuren
OK, great. Thanks again for all the help. I am going to let it run overnight and see how it looks. But, I think we can close this thread. Mike
