Hi Scotty,

The internet connectivity issue seems to have occurred between late Sunday and Monday evening. I was on the computer playing freecell (simple pleasures for simple minds huh). Before I went to bed I checked my email and did not have a problem. My wife was on the computer Monday morning and did not have a problem with the connection. By monday evening we had a jizzilion popups on the screen telling us the computer was under attack and anytime we tried to close them - they opened internet Explorer. Each time they tried to open IE it failed and we have not been able to access the internet from that computer since then.

I ran the batch file like you said.
I also looked under c:/Windows but did not see svcproc.exe (or any program named svc) - I did however see svchost under C:/Windows/System32. Not sure if that means anything. Task manager is showing it as a processes and it appears about 10 times with the owner as system, Network Services and Local Services.

I then ran HijackThis and checked the files you listed. Then 'fix checked'. Rebooted and ran HijackThis again. As you'll see from the log svcproc is back again. Still no internet.

I swear - if I ever make it to Bonnie Scotland, I'll be taking you out for a nice steak.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi

Could you right-click the Network Monitor icon and select Repair, then power everything off for a ew minutes before rebooting and let me know if that works.

Also

Delete bad services
Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
sc stop WinToolsSvc
sc delete WinToolsSvc
del /q Fixservices.bat
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Download and Run Norton Removal Tool
You seem to have some leftovers from Norton/Symantec so please download and run their tool:
Here
Good morning Scotty,

I've tried to repair suggestion and it doesn't get very far. Window shows "Renewing IP address", then a failed message comes up saying it could not renew the IP address. Contact the network adminstrator - that's me and I have no clue what to do about it  .

I ran the bat file as you directed and noticed that svcproc was still there when I did a HijackThis. Being the curious person I am, I did a google search on the file name. It was reccomended that I try Nailfix. I ran it as Administrator in Safe Mode and rebooted to Windows normal mode. Ran HijackThis and it appears to have gotten rid of it (hopefully for good). Hope it is OK with you that I did this.

I also removed a couple of the kids games that were on the desktop that were not used anymore:
Age of Empires - Trail edition
Age of Mythology
Diablo II Shareware
StarWars Galaxies - Trail Edition
Google Toolbar
carp** Cleaner
3D Home Architect
Tried to delete iTunes also but it would not let me.

In the log - I see something called Speed Racer - under Add/Remove Programs I can not see anything tied to that. Can I get rid of it using HijackThis ?
A couple of other I have questions on are:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MoneyStartUp10.0] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\Activation.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Speed racer] C:\Program Files\Creative\PlayCenter\CTSRReg.exe

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)

We do not use Microsoft Money - it came with the computer but we do not use it.

One last thing - I leave this Tuesday for a business trip - I will not be back until Oct 6th. I feel fairly good that the desktop is stable enough to where someone can not hack my personal data. I will disable the network connection before I leave. I'll still work with it today and Monday.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi

Hopefully we can resolve this soon.

I knew that service was related to Nail but as I so no evidence of nail itself, I dithered over running Nailfix. Kudos for you for beating me to it.

Just a couple of things while I have others help me with the connection issues.

Open Notepad and Copy/Paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Folder::
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\Program Files\Symantec
C:\Program Files\AWS

Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Weather"=-

Driver::
SNDSrvc

Save this as "CFScript"

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log with a new HijackThis log.

Then go to Start>Run and type in cmd.

In the window that opens copy/paste the contents of the box below.

ipconfig /all

If possible copy/paste the results back in your next reply.

Finally, open up the McAfee Security Centre, and select the Personal Firewall. Then click on View the Internet Applications List

Look through the list to make sure no instances of svchost.exe or iexplore.exe have been blocked. If so let me know in your next reply.

Finally, Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad (must be notepad):

dir c:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\tcpip.sys /a h > file1.txt
c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\tcpip.sys /a h > file2.txt

Save it to your desktop as info.bat, save as: all files.

Now, the info.bat file on the desktop. It will flash briefly and produce two files placed on your desktop, file1.txt and file2.txt.

Please paste their contents into your next post.
Hi Scotty,

I feel like such a fool.
I reran Combofix as instructed (with the script file) the log is below.
I ran ipconfig /all but it flashed up so fast there was no way of capturing it. I tried again to see if I could pipe the output but it din't work. Both times I tried the screen appeared to be blank.

I then went into McAfee and checked the View the Internet Applications List as I was recording the entries so that I could retype them in the email I saw something that I was not sure off so I clicked "Info". At the top of the screen it showed a red dot with the message that the system was in "lockdown". I cursed under my breath. Back on Monday when we knew we were infected I locked the system down so that my banking info was not stolen. I never uplocked it again.

Once I "unlocked" internet capabilities were restored and we have printing capabilities again also.
I believe the computer is fixed now. Everything seems to work correctly (except my mind). I can now go on travel knowing my kids can print their homework :) . Although I'll be wearing the dunce hat for abit.

I can not tell you how much I appreciate all of your help. My desktop was heading towards the trash and I though I was going to have to rebuild my entire network. Let alone the idea of losing my identity from stolen information.
Like I mentioned be for - If I ever get to you neck of the woods I owe you a great dinner. For now I'll suffice by donating to the site.

If you see anything on the following logs that I still need to get rid of please let me know.
Many, many Thanks,
Steve

Hi

It's lucky I thought to have you look there. I was preparing a whole bunch of fixes for you. An easy oversight.

Ok dlete the Combofix icon and fsbl from your Desktop, then navigate to and delete these folders, if they are present
C:\Combofix
C:\Qoobox

I would advise updating Adobe Reader, as the latest version clears up any vulnerabilities of previous versions.
First uninstall the version you have on your computer then download and install Adobe Reader 8.1.

Delete the older versions of Java and download the newest.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (4th one down the list), which is JRE6u2, and click Yes at the page warning, then accept the Licence Agreement before downloading the Offline file.

This is my usual speech for when you are clean, which you appear to be.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore.

It's also a good idea to Flush your System Restore points after ridding yourself of malware:
  • Click Start | Help and Support | Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close the Help and Support Center box.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Re hide your system files To do so, please follow the steps below:
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Put a check by "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Do not show hidden files and folders."
  • Check "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some free programs, I recommend.

Install Spyware Guard
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Guard here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Make sure your Windows is ALWAYS up to date!

An unpatched Windows is vulnerable and even with the "best" Antivirus and Firewall installed, malware will find its way through.
So visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to download and install the latest updates.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

I will probably close this thread tommorrow but you will still be able to use the links and read it. Happy surfing.
