Okay, I was stupid and I downloaded some kind of trojan, accidently. Now whenever my computer boots up, the startbar and desktop are there, but then they'll disappear, reappear several seconds later, disappear again for another eight or so seconds, repeating this process until they finally disappear permanently until I restart the computer. So I've had to restart my computer several times to find the program that I believe was the trojan and delete it and to run AVG, Adaware, all the above listed programs and delete all trojans, spywares that it detected. However, I've still got the problem now that I'm pretty sure that the trojan is completely gone. What's the deal?

Oh, and when I press ctrl+alt+dlt, the only thing that shows up as under the Administrator's name is: ctfmon.exe, firefox.exe, picasamediadetector.exe, taskmgr.exe, HPBootOp.exe (which I don't think I've ever seen before), and KBD.exe . Aren't I missing something like rundll.exe or something like that? Can anyone help, please?

I need you to rename Hijackthis because I suspect that you may have the Vundo infection that can hide some entries in your log.

• Please go to the folder where you saved Hijackthis.exe: In your case - C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
• Right-click on it, then select Rename.
• Name it something like: FindVundo.exe (or whatever you want) - Just make sure to keep the .exe part.
• Then double-click the renamed HJT to scan and then post the new logfile.

I really appreciate all the help. If all else fails, I do have an extenernal harddrive, and I can just wipe it and save all the important files from this computer to the EHD. I really hope it doesn't come to that, but I guess that's the price you gotta pay sometimes. Thanks a lot.

Hopefully it won't come to a re-install. I've helped clean many a Vundo infected PC without having too. And that's what we have here. So let's get to work.

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Hi Andy,

Glad to hear things are better. We still have some work to do though.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes.
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First:
- Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
- Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
- Open Spybot S&D
- Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
- Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
- If your firewall raises a question, say OK
- Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
- Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware
Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

• Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
• Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
• On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
  • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
  • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
  • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
  • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
• Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.

Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Run AVG Anti-Spyware
Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.

• Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
• Click on the Settings tab.
  • Under How to act?
    • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
  • Under How to scan?
    • All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Possibly unwanted software:
    • All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Reports:
    • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
  • Under What to scan?
    • Select Scan every file.
• Click on the Scan tab.
• Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
• Let the program scan the machine.
• When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
  IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
  • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine[/color] (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
  • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
    
• When done, click the Save Scan Report button. (4)
  • Click the Save Report as button.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
• Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

You will need to run this with Internet Explorer.
Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.

• Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
• A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
• If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
• Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
• Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
• Save the log someplace you can find
• Reboot
• Post the Panda scan results in your next reply

So to sum up I need the AVG report, Panda report, and a fresh HJT log. Let me know how it's running also.
