I'm entirely to new to be really posting anything, but this problem I have right now has gotten to the point that I honestly have no idea what to do. I was tricked into downloading this Codec, same as the title (ActiveX Video Codec v1.4), and since then I have been getting copious amounts of "Windows Security Alerts," "System Alerts," and pop ups asking for me to install an alleged virus stopper called "Ultimate Defender."

If I have to, I suppose I could just wipe my Hard Drive, but I really don't want to do so if there is a spot of light at the end of this tunnel.
Please help, I sincerely apologize for the lack of information, but it's the best that I could do. Oh, I almost forgot, every now and then, the desktop will be given a backdrop, showing a BioHazard symbol with the words "YOUR PRIVACY IS IN DANGER: DOWNLOAD PRIVACY PROTECTION SOFTWARE NOW" and it has a carbon copy of all of my desktop icons (Except for a few). The wierd thing is, it is basically a pop up, everywhere I click on the backdrop, the "Ultimate Defender" pop-up appears again. I know this isn't really any information to go off on probably, but any information as to what to do would be very much appreciated.

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named:
c:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:

  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

This computer is fighting me at every step it would seem. I attempted the reboot, but instead of letting me select Safe Mode, it just came up with a blue screen, that gave me three options, asking me to select a device to boot. Here are the three options: 1st Floppy Drive HDD: PM Maxtor6E040L0 CDROM: SM-SONY DVD ROM DDV1613 I've tried all of them, but I've only been getting back on like regular, any suggestions?

Okay, the backround is blue. No backround funny business, and I'm not getting a ton of pop-ups either, everything seems to be normal. Home page is altered, but isn't defaulted to the "Ultimate Defender" website like it was before.
Only a little cleanup

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Log looks good :D

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Download and install Ad-Aware.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis
just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
A million thanks LDT, your a genius! :D :D I've downloaded all of the programs you suggested and I am making it a habit to update them periodically. Again, thanks for saving my computer! -Scott
