2-week old PC running Windows XP Pro w/3 user accounts. Using Verizon DSL with their Internet Security Suite. Spyware scan result=newmediacodec and ruptnogle found. Deleted quar. files. Popups continue. Tries to access web page selling antispyware solution. (As if.) All users internet main page settings changed to same web page and won't let us change it. Can access internet, but after a few seconds browser auto-changes to same web page. So, might as well have no access at all. Writing this from old PC. Read threads. Downloaded hijackthis.exe to a CD and then copied it to the infected PC desktop. Now what?
Hi Unbalanced Accountant and welcome to the forums,

You need to run HJT and post the log back here.

Read through the information in this link. It will tell you how to download HJT and post a log. It also has other information about how to do things here. Please read through the whole thing then run and post your HJT log here. Please do not start a new topic but reply here.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • NOTE:Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

STEP 1:

We are going to use HJT to create a list of your currently installed programs.1. Open HijackThis and click on the Config… button in the "Other stuff" section (lower right hand corner).
2. Click on the Misc Tools button.
3. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager… button.
4. Click on the Save list… button.
5. Save the file uninstall_list.txt to a convinient location. This should open Notepad with the list.
6. Please Copy and Paste the list into your next reply.
STEP 2:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi, Dave. Sorry for the delay in responding. Can't access the 'net from the infected PC, only had one way to copy and move files from my old PC to the new (3.5" floppy!!!), and it started acted wonky, so I gave up. I then remembered being handed a flash drive at a convention, but couldn't remember where it was! Got it now! Question: Does our having 3 XP users mean we'll need to repeat some of this more than once? Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate how well put together this site is and how precisely worded are the instructions and caveats to us newbies. Makes it difficult for anyone who is Paying Attention to mess up and say nobody warned us. Hi,

Can't access the 'net from the infected PC,

When did this start? Do you have any idea why?

If not try this:

Go to start > Run… and type cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type next in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
hit enter.

This may solve your broken connection. If not let me know.

Question: Does our having 3 XP users mean we'll need to repeat some of this more than once?

Possibly some of it. But hopefully not all. Do the main part of the fix from the main Admin. account. Remind me if I forget at the end to get a HJT log run from each account.

Before we continue the fix for Smitfraud I have an observation/question. You appear to have possibly 3 Antivirus programs running, Authentium AntiVirus SDK - 2, Radialpoint Security Services, and Verizon Internet Security Suite. You said at the beginning you were using the Verizon Suite. I'm not familiar with it. Does it use one of the other 2 AV's I mentioned also? Or are those separate? Let me know.
The reason I mention this is this can cause many issues including system slow down, conflicts, false positives, ect…
You can leave them installed but just use one for real-time scanning and disable the other. The disabled program can still be used for one-time scans. I would recommend uninstalling all but one of them if you do not intend to keep it updated.
But don't remove anything if the Verizon Suite depends on it. Let me know on this also.
Oh also, I still see Norton Live Update installed. Did you have Norton AV here at one time also?

In general you never want to run 2 Anti-Virus or Firewall programs at the same time. Other types of Spyware protection such as Spybot, SpywareBlaster, ect… are usually OK (and recommended) to have multiple programs running for layered protection.

Okay let's get on with the fix.

Running the Clean
Download AVG Anti-Spyware from Here and save that file to your
desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop

Hi, Dave.

Me: [

Can't access the 'net from the infected PC,

You: When did this start? Do you have any idea why?

I can access the net from the infected PC, but it opens at page that appears to start downloading software (timer pops up). I can type in another URL in the address bar and go to another page but only for a few seconds, and them I'm switched back to the home page (the one the virus/malware/spyware/whatever set up and that I can't change.)

You: Before we continue the fix for Smitfraud I have an observation/question.

All of the programs you mentioned are components of the Verizon Internet Security Suite (VISS).

You: Oh also, I still see Norton Live Update installed. Did you have Norton AV here at one time also?

Yes, it was installed by the gentleman who assembled the computer for us. I thought I uninstalled it when I installed VISS, but it looks like the registry didn't know about it. I'll research what I need to do to fully remove it and take care of that.

You: Okay let's get on with the fix.

I downloaded AVG (that's what we use on the old PC) and then had to leave for work. I also read the rest of your instructions and plan to finish up this evening. I hope the scans won't take long because it's a brand new PC with only a little software and no user docs yet.

Thanks for your patience!

Linda, the Unbalanced
Hi Linda,

Okay, hopefully the fixes we do here should cure your internet redirect issues.

Yes, Norton is known for being stubborn to remove. You can start at the following link and go to whatever version you had installed and see if those directions help. This is an all to common issue with them.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

I'll keep an eye out for the logs. Hopefully by the next time you post back your internet will be at least useable.
Hi, Dave.

I got an error message when downloading the AVG updates; couldn't decompress downloaded files, or something. Ran the scan anyway; no errors found so no report to post.

Everything seems okay now.

Thanks again for your patience and excellent advice.

Linda, the Unbalanced

Okay, looks good. Let's do a Kaspersky scan to see if anything is lurking. This can take a long time but your computer is newer so hopefully won't take as long for you. Something you could start up before bed and just let it go tonight. Just stick around for the update then start it if you have time.

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * Click 'Accept' in the window that pops up.
* You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click on the information bar and select Install ActiveX Control if so. This may happen more than once. That is OK. You also may get a warning from your Windows Firewall. You can tell it to unblock.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save Report As…' button:
* Make sure it says Save as a text file - change it if not
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Well, just heck. More stuff found. So frustrating! Here's the new logs:

Not to worry Linda,

What Kaspersky found was in your restore points, which we will clean below, and the Smitfraudfix tool, which you can delete now along with any files/folders it created.

You appear to be all clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
