This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

A. 1. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK.

2. Then copy and paste the content of the following codebox into Notepad:

sc stop McTaskManager
sc delete McTaskManager
sc stop McShield
sc delete McShield
sc stop McAfeeFramework
sc delete McAfeeFramework
del delete.bat

3. Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this on your desktop: [external image: Posted Image]

4. Double click delete.bat.

B. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: scriptproxy - {7DB2D5A0-7241-4E79-B68D-6309F01C5231} - C:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan Enterprise\scriptcl.dll
    O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [McAfeeUpdaterUI] "C:\Program Files\McAfee\Common Framework\UdaterUI.exe" /StartedFromRunKey
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShStatEXE] "C:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan Enterprise\SHSTAT.EXE" /STANDALONE

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if still present):

C:\Program Files\McAfee<== Folder and all its content
    C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools\SetupDTSB.exe<==File

And also please empty your Norton Antivirus Quarantine

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine<==Do not delete the folder, just the content

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

after taking these steps my aim will no longer open. I double click and it flashes on and then automatically shuts itself down.
Please uninstall it then download a fresh copy and install it. When you have done this, please post back the results of your efforts and if everything is OK, we will start the final cleanup procedures. Trevuren
I uninstalled the program, restarted my computer and then installed it but had the same outcome. When I double click on the icon to open the program it flashes up on the screen and then shuts down.
Your logs are clean. However, at the moment, I do not have any idea of why your AIm has stopped working properly. Try disabling your software firewall. I f you are still having problems, try to see if there is a message that pops up when you try to connect, there may be a file that is looking for. Essentially all that was done was, you removed a lot of cookies and we removed McAfee. Neither of which should affect AIM. Trevuren
not just my aim has stopped working, my norton's anti-virus is also missing a file. When I log on to my computer windows installer says it is configuring Norton and then it says it is unable to, it is looking for a file called nav.msi, which is not there. because of this my norton anti-virus cannot enable auto-protect.
The only steps that you have taken are to

1. Uninstall McAfee products which have nothing to do with their Competitor Norton
2. Run an Online Scanner that does not remove a thing.
3. Remove 1 infected file from Daemon Tools.

I suggest that you UNINSTALL Norton according to the intructions provided on their site, then reinstall the product. Choose the correct instructions, the ones that go with your specific Norton Product and year.
ok I have reinstalled Norton's and I just removed aim. idk what was wrong with it, but no matter how many times I uninstalled and then reinstalled the program it did the same thing. I'll just do without.

Your log looks clean. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures and recommendations.

Trevuren
Congratulations, your log looks CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Time for some housekeeping

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Run the tool by clicking on the icon.
  • Click the Cleanup button.
  • The tools that we used as well as this one will be removed from your system.

3. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

4. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,

Trevuren
