Hello - I've been using the board and doing things to try and remove some adware and things that got into my system and brought things to a slow crawl - and eventually locked out brower services (email and IM were fine) as it seems that my McAfee firewall and IE were not playing nice.

I've removed McAfee (used AFN to scan) - used VundoFix to remove a few problems and think I may be close to clean - I've tried to see if the dll wvutssr.dll is a bug but not sure.

Attached is my report from HiJackThis and would appreciate if someone has any insight on how clean things look.

Thanks in advance,
-Clyde.

Hi Clyde and welcome to the forums.

From the lack of 02 and 020 items in the HJT log it appears Vundo is still hiding. wvutssr.dll is a Vundo file also.

I need you to rename Hijackthis because I suspect that you may have the Vundo infection that can hide some entries in your log.
  • Please go to the folder where you saved Hijackthis.exe:
  • Right-click on it, then select Rename.
  • Name it something like: FindVundo.exe (or whatever you want)
  • Then double-click the renamed HJT to scan and then post the new logfile.

Hi IndiGenus - thanks so much for the reply. I'm running a full virus scan (Kaspersky) and will see if things can be cleaned a bit before doing the suggested run of HTJ (after rename). Wll post that here soon after deep scans and such are complete. I believe I was in Safe Mode with the prior HTJ - will post new one from regular full boot for your review & possible comments. Thanks again, -Clyde.

Hello - I tried to clean some things on my end and don't think I have had any luck.
I've run virus scans - have gotten reports of things cleaned - things unable to be repaired - reboot and clean then, etc - still think something is in the system.

I've rebooted in regular mode to run the HJT process in regular mode vs "safe mode"

Below is my HJT file - think I still have the bug - any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
-Clyde.

Even if you still have the Vundo tool from before please delete it download again. These tools are constantly being updated so you may have an older version.

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Hi IndiGenus - will do exactly as directed. 1 Question - do I need to be in Safe Mode when running the Vundofix.exe file or should I be in regular mode? Thanks, -C.

Sad to say I don't think the process is getting any better - did as requested and it indeed said that their was a file it could not delete.

after reboot I was able to remove the file it found - but upon reboot after than (current state) the virus software found the trojan loading stuff again.

below is the HJT file - I did not get a text file from Vundofix created on my desktop when I ran it (have been in regular mode not "safe mode")

I have found the original image disks that came with this machine and will go ahead and do a clean reset and rebuild.

Thanks for your help,
-Clyde.

Don't give up yet. Vundo can be stubborn and requires a little extra effort but we can get it. I have had good luck lately with Combofix on stubborn Vundo cases. We may still have to do some cleanup after but it can be fixed. I've done many lately just like this one.

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Hi IndiGenus, thanks so much for the continued attempts to help. At this point I have backups (scanned and clean) and did not have a problem with punting this thing off the system for good with a factory reset. That said maybe you could suggest the best tools to protect from this coming back. I had McAfee installed and up to date but the "bug" seemed to get in under it - I think it was Sheur.ZQ as a Trojan Adware program was the culprit but who knows. Do you recommend using AVG and Adaware as defense vs McAfee? I'm happy to move to something else. Let me know your thoughts on protection as I'm rebuilding as we speak - well type :) Thanks again, -Clyde.

Hi Clyde,

Here are some recommendations. With an infection like Vundo, that is constantly changing, the AV products can't always keep up. With that said you still need it. I'm using Avast now and like it better than AVG. But you be the judge. Both are free for personal use (links below). Putting those other items in place can also help keep you from getting to those nasty sites that pilfer that stuff. It really comes down to good common sense and education about this stuff. Staying away from porn sites, avoiding P2P, not downloading free screensavers, smileys, ect......

I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 2 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,
Dave
