 I am trying to go through the steps before submitting a HJT log and am having trouble with something on this page:

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/Securing_Pc_Af…ack_t57869.html

In the middle of the page, where it says "Three free programs which we recommend", I am trying to use the link that says

"How To Install and Setup Ad-Aware SE". When I click the link, I get a 404 page. Is this a temporary problem? Or should I

use Ad-Aware 2007? If so, what are the settings? Thanks for any information and help someone can supply!
Hello DeeJa

Things have changed a bit since that topic was written. Personally, I dont like the new Ad-aware. It installs a non-functioning service with the free version. If you want a check up just do this,

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Hi Mac70

and THANK YOU, first of all, for your time and help! I was having trouble signing onto my internet portal and MailWasherPro, so I decided to do some online scans. I found out later that my isp instituted a new requirement for passwords due to an emergency situation and my password at the time did not completely fulfill the new requirements, ie lower and upper case, numerals, etc. So once that was corrected, that particular problem was resolved. Anyway, when performing these scans I got flagged for some items, which I suspect and hope were false positives. Some of the items were: W32DLoader.BUQ, TR/Agent.1810432, W95/Blumblebee.1738, TR/Agent.CFT. I apologize for not being able to tell exactly programs and what items went with each other. A couple of times I think Avira reacted while I was trying to download the files for the online scan, which I assume now is my fault–I should have had my usual av deactivated while downloading the online scan, right? With all that said, I hope you can take the above information and see if I have anything that needs to be addressed. Again, thanks SO MUCH!
Hi DeeJa

Im not seeing anything of a real menace in your log. Could you humour me by running another scan?

Download Superantispyware (SAS) free home version.

SAS Free

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
· It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
· Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
· Click the Scanning Control tab.
· Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
  • Close browsers before scanning
  • Scan for tracking cookies
  • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Please leave the others unchecked.
  • Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
· On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
· On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
· On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
· Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
· After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
· Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
· It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
· To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
  • After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
  • Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
  • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
  • It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
  • Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
· Click close and close again to exit the program.
· Please paste that information here for me with a new HijackThis log.

Just a couple of optional points to make.

Although Incredimail is considered to be a legitimate program that people install intentionally, please read this information regarding Incredimail very carefully and use you best judgment in deciding if you want to keep this program on your computer or not.
The use of Incredimail opens your system to attacks, and in the User Agreement, claims permanent ownership of everything sent through their mail service. See the full article. I read this article and noticed the date was 10/10/02 so just in case the information had changed since then and was no longer a concern, I downloaded Incredimail from Incredimail's site. Before installing, I read the EULA and there it was still. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. To uninstall Incredimail:
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Incredimail , click Remove.
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.
I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Hi Mac70,

I will attempt to use any program you recommend in trying to make sure my computer is as clean as possible. BTW, are you aware that McAfee SiteAdvisor has the SUPERAntispyware site flagged with red? I felt okay using the site, because you recommended it, but it does have a questionable reputation with McAfee, perhaps for no reason.

Re: IncrediMail – I have not used this program for probably two years. But I plan to contact them and question them about these issues, although I am confident someone already has and they defended their position. But out of curiosity I still want to contact them. If I don't receive any answer or any satisfactory answers, then I will uninstall. I do not understand why a program creator would keep something in the EULA that causes the program to get negative reviews. There were some other points in the article you linked, that would be nice to have explained too. I am not very confident about hearing from them, but I will see what happens.

Re: Viewpoint – It is uninstalled. I did not even know what it was or that I had it.

I have a question about a couple of the programs–Spybot S &D and Microsoft Antispyware and about online scans. Should I ask them here or start a new topic?

I am looking forward to your comments, help and suggestions. MANY thanks!
Hello DeeJa

I cant think why SA flags SuperantiSpyware. But it's not 100% perfect. I had to stop using Site Advisor as it had my cpu working too hard, my fan was coming on constantly. But I can assure you, any links we provide here are safe. :)

If you have any questions, ask away.

Lets do a little cleaning up.

Navigate to and delete the following files and/or folders (if they are present):

Folders:

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

I would advise updating Adobe Reader, as the latest version clears up any vulnerabilities of previous versions.
First uninstall the version you have on your computer then download and install Adobe Reader 8.1.

Now post a new HijackThis log, please.

Hi…hope this did right…i see the 016 entry numbers are there, but where it told what it was is gone. I have the newer version of Adobe installed. I will wait until we get through with HJ logs to ask the questions. Thanks Mac70…I really appreciate your help!
Hi DeeJa

Use your CCleaner to tidy up. Those 016's were harmless and CCleaner should tidy up the orphaned Active X's.

This is my usual speech for when you are clean, which you appear to be.
  • Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable
and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK
And take a look at this LINKY for further recommendations and tips to stay clean.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
Hi Mac70, I did the System Restore and checked the settings for IE and viewing files. I have scanned the article at Linky about further recommendations and one of my questions–about online scans–was answered. There is a lot of material to read there, so I will try to check it all out soon. My remaining questions concern some of the programs used to check the computer–Spybot S & D, Windows Defender, and SUPERAntiSpyware: Spybot S & D–is it recommended to use the Tea Timer feature in this program? If so, I have a problem with it. I enabled it for a while. Every time I connected, it would warn me about changes being made and asking me what I wanted done. Part of my problem was that the box that showed my options was messed up and I couldn't see what I was either okaying or denying. So I have disabled Tea Timer for now. I am assuming that if Tea Timer is recommended to be used, I can reinstall Spybot S & D and hopefully that problem won't remain. So I want to know if I should even be using the Tea Timer feature. Windows Defender–should I leave this program installed and running in the background? If so, are there any special settings? It seems to scan often. SUPERAntiSpyware–should I leave this program installed and running in the background? I thought I read in a topic somewhere, not necessarily here, that the person should use it then uninstall it. I understand that after 30 days I will have the freeware version, right? Would you look at this list as created in HJThis and make any recommendations? This list was created after a reboot and before I began opening programs. The Teatimer box is a bug with that version. A solution is found here but if it seems a bit tricky, to "Allow Change" is the box on the left, "Disallow" is on the right. You can disable Teatimer by clicking on Mode then Advanced, Tools and Resident. Uncheck the teatimer box.

You only need one spyware real-time monitor working at a time and Defender will give you ample protection. AVG's and SAS are trials and lose that function after 30 days, but it's always handy to have a couple of spyware programs as they find different things.
Perhaps you should keep Spybot and Defender and uninstall AVG and SAS.

Now, I take it you are wanting to trim down the startup programs via msconfig?

Create a Startup List
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config…" button on the bottom right"
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Check the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post
Hi Mac70,

I had already disabled Teatimer. The box I was not able to fully view seemed to be a dropdown menu. I had only one box to choose from, but could not see the word showing. When I x-ed out of the big box, another box popped up in the corner and said the action had been Denied.

I uninstalled SAS and AVG AS as you can see from the following log. My load time had increased significantly, so that is why I was interested in checking what I can do to improve the situation. I am glad you mentioned AVG AS–I remember that the person helping someone said to uninstall one of those two, because it was one that has a 30-day fully functional capability. But both have been uninstalled.

I see several things that seem to be missing entries. I have been reluctant to use CCleaner to clean in the registry because one time I used it and some things did not work right afterward. The CC people assured me that it was nothing their program did, but I was scared to use it after that for registry issues. So if you want me to use the Registry feature of CC, let me know what to check.

Thanks again for your help and time!

Hi DeeJa

Go to Start>Run and in the little dialogue box, type msconfig.

In the window that opens, select Startup.

Uncheck these items.

IgfxTray, HotKeysCmds, UpdReg, ISUSPM Startup, ISUSScheduler, iTunesHelper, SunJavaUpdateSched
