Hi bradandbrian,

You've removed the Yahoo Toolbar Helper which has left a orphaned entry that we can remove:

Temporarily disable Spyware Doctor
Open Spyware Doctor, click the OnGuard button on the left side, press Click to deactivate OnGuard and OK the prompt
OnGuard will now be deactivated for 15 minutes, either complete the HijackThis instructions within that time or repeat this procedure

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Your computer now appears to be clean of malware so I think the System Restore and Javascript issues have other causes.

There are some IE7 troubleshooting procedures on this page, including how to reset all security and browser settings to default:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/936213

We can check the Event Viewer for information relating to System Restore:

Next press Start->Run, type compmgmt.msc into the box and press OK
In the left-hand pane, select Event Viewer->System
Right-click System and choose Save Log File As…
Add the file name evs and change the Save as type: to Text
Open evs.txt, the most recent events should be on the top.

Post the log entries for the last 5-7 days with your next response along with another HijackThis log.
Last several days of evs.txt log:

Hi bradandbrian,

Reboot your computer normally, don't start any applications and wait a couple of minutes for Windows to get itself sorted.
Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c net start >> "%userprofile%\desktop\services.txt"

A file called services.txt should appear on your Desktop, post the contents in your next response.

Then please make and post a StartupList log:

Open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Place checkmarks in both boxes next to the Generate StartupList log button
Then press the Generate StartupList log button and say Yes to the prompt
Save the StartupList log to your deskop

Once complete, please post the StartupList log.

Then, try this:

Right-click My Computer (from the desktop or Start Menu)
Click Properties and choose the System Restore tab
Check Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then Yes to confirm, you may need to wait a moment while Windows deletes old System Restore Points
Then, UN-Check Turn off System Restore
Click OK

Now, try using System Restore to create a new Restore Point.

Once complete, please post the services.txt output, the StartupList log and let me know whether System Restore worked or not.
Still a no-go on the System Restore… it either does nothing at all or it opens a blank white window which remains that way for a long time (I've tried waiting a while in case it's just thinking really hard about doing it, but the HD light doesn't indicate that too much is happening).

I've done the other steps and the logs are posted here:

These Windows services are started:

Ad-Aware 2007 Service

Hi bradandbrian,

The relevant services appear to be running or able to run and I can't see anything in there which could cause the issues you describe. Now that the machine is clean, I think the fastest way to deal with these issues is to post in the Other computer problems forum here at Tom Coyote. They specialize in these types of problems and I'm sure they'll resolve the problems swiftly for you.

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, such as Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-…sonal-Firewall/
http://www.zonelabs.com/

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
Thank you very much for all your help and time… I really appreciate it. I'm sure the issue will be pinned down, but several evils have been cleaned off now, so that's a great start! I will take the next steps you suggested. Brian
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance.

If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread.

Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
