Can someone help me please? I run XP+SP2 and IE6, and use AVG, Spybot and Adaware - all regularly updated.

However, I seem to be infected with the above malware. I have just scanned using HijackThis and the log is as follows:

Hi Folks

I guess you guys are all very busy, so I've had a stab at fixing my problems myself using the guidines on this site (the SpyAxe "self help" section - for which, many thanks!)

Below are posted the results of my latest HijackThis scan, the Ewido logfile and the smithstrem log as I was advised to do.

If some kind, clued-up person could review these logs, comment / advise me as neccessary, and let me know if there are still any "nasties" present on my system before I do a comprehensive backup, I would be vey grateful.

I would also be grateful for advice on how to avoid re-infection. I already run (and regularly update) AVG, Spybot and Adaware; I have enabled the MS firewall in XP SP2 and I use an Origo ASR-8100 modem-router.

Some comments when following you guidelines in the SpyAxe "self-help" section:

(1) You advise opening the "smithfraud" folder. The only folder I had like that was the "smithrem" folder, so I used that. Did I do the right thing?
(2) When I expected Disk Cleanup to run, an MS "Safe Mode" widow came up asking if I wished to continue working in safe mode. I clicked "yes" - did I do the right thing?
(3) There was no indication that Disk Cleanup had started, was running or had finished, so I simply left it for several hours before just carrying on with the rest of your advised procedure. Is this normal? Was Disk Cleanup confounded by the fact that I run a pair of SATA hard drives in Raid 1?
(4) Windows Explorer did not find mssearchnet.exe or nvctrl.exe so I could not delete them.
(5) When running the Ewido scanner I did not find any boxes anywhere for Binder, Crypter or Archives to check, so I went to "settings" and selected "all files". Did I do the right thing? Where are the check boxes for Binder etc. please?
(6) While the Ewido scan was in progress I was not prompted to clean files - but there did not appear to be any infected ones anyway.
(7) After all this, my recycle bin was empty. Is this normal?

As I said, any advice would be gratefully received!

Here are the various logs:

Hi Folks!

Still awaiting a reply, I'm afraid.

I think I've fixed the SpyAxe problem, thanks to the excellent instructions and advice on your website which I followed, but I would be grateful if one of your team could please have a look at my latest log to confirm there are no remaining (or any new) nasties.

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. Sorry for the wait and you did a good job  I see no malware in your HJT log. You are running HJT from a Temp folder and if you need to use it can't safely store backups. I suggest: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe.

Since you are clean, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Hi Phil Many thanks for your prompt and reassuring response. Your suggested links to additional information also appear to be very helpful. I will keep a note of these, and also pass the advice on to others. I must say I am very impressed generally with the excellent clear way the advice is set out in this forum - you can never make it too clear or too simple for people like me! I just wish the writers of other guides and manuals (including MS) did such a good job. Just two further points: (a) I raised 7 queries about your recommended procedure in my second post. Advice on these points would be welcome. If you are not the best person to comment on these, please advice me who I should contact. (b ) I wish to make a donation, using Paypal. The link from here leads to a note 'Site temprarily down'. Is this a prob at your end or at Paypal? If you do not know, who should I ask, please? Anyway, thanks again for your help and advice. Regards- Titus

1) If we are talking about noahdfears fix, I am sure it is the smitRem folder. Smitfraud is the trojan and I am sure it was typed in error.

2) I would say this is fine, all of these tools do a better job in safe mode with only the basic stuff running. Widows does like to ask a lot of questions. I personally suggest you run Disk Cleanup as well as Defrag in safe mode when you run it.

3) I can tell you it does take a while depending upon how often you run it and how bad the shape of the disk is. As far as: SATA hard drives in Raid 1? Creating issues I do not know. That would be a question for the technicians at Sata.

4) The smitRem fix is complex because the hackers who use it keep adding junk to it to confound removal. The two items you mention are in almost every infection and their removal is part of the smitRem process.

5) Not sure about this one, I can offer the tutorial I use when I use ewido as a removal tool. Keep in mind noahdfear uses equido because it does a great job of cleaning out garbage. It is not actually part of smitRem.
http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm

6) Without looking the, settings in the fix might include "remove everything found" ? I personally prefer to allow the user to make the decisions just in case ewido makes an error and removes something it should not. In the hundreds of times I have given ewido to a member to use this has never happened, but I would rather them ignore and item and me tell them later to remove it than have the tool on automatic and something removed that should not be. While ewido is no miracle fix, it is a darn good free (trial) tool and I suggest you undate and run the scan often, removing what is found if you do not know it is good. Unless you purchase the tool, there is no good reason to allow it to run and use resources.

7) I looked at the self-help fix LDTate posted and I see no cleaner in it. Some cleaners will (if that is the way you set them) empty the Recycle Bin as part of the cleaning process. I prefer to do this manually because, like the backups in HJT, the Recycle Bin is the last place you can retrive an item removed in error. You may also want to make sure you do not have it set to be bypassed.

RECYCLE BIN
Let's check you recycle bin to make sure it has not been bypassed. RIGHT click on it and choose properties. It should, by default, be set to "Use one setting for all drives"
Make sure the box "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted IS NOT CHECKED. Make sure you have space for deleted items, I keep my bin set at 5%. Now when we delete the file or folder, it will be moved to the bin and can be restored IF we make a mistake and need it back. I hope this helps.

If you have, I suggest you change those settings.

If you need additional information about this self-help fix I have not provided, I am sure LDTate would be glad to answer them:

Hi Phil - thanks for info. Attempts to use Paypal using your link are greeted with "We are sorry, we are experiencing temporary difficulties. Please try again later. If this error occurred while making a payment, avoid duplicate payments by checking your Account Overview before resending a payment. Message 3005" Thought I'd better let you know - don't want your valuable organisation to be losing out! Cheers- Titus

This appears to be a PayPal issue as far as I can see so far, the link for my site works, and so does PayPal at this time, the message you posted would seem to come from PayPal as I have no text on my pages that would match that at any time, many thanks for bringing this to our attention. The posted fix was updated Jan 15 2006, 10:12 PM This infection changes rather quickly. The "Self Help Fix" you used by the date you posted, Jan 6 2006, 06:02 AM, as you can see has been updated. We are very happy you were able to clean your system. Thanks to pskelley for answering all your questions

I'M very glad I was able to clean my system, as well - thanks to you guys, and of course pskelley in particular! Also an excellent idea to post a nice clear "do-it-yourself" guide to clearing particularly widespread viruses, to take some of the workload off volunteers. Certainly seemed to work for me, thank goodness. I now suspect the Paypal problem may be caused by the fact that I have only just set up my Paypal account, so there may be a short delay while it is being validated. I'll wait awhile and see.
