I like the XP CD route.
Remember to backup your data, documents, media and important files, even the Outlook .pst files, if you have emails that you want to preserve.
Before you begin to format/reinstall your operating system, be sure to visit the computer manufacturer's website to Download the Chipset Drivers and any other Drivers they may have available for your machine. – Save to CD
When reinstalling, follow this order of events:
Install XP
Install DirectX 9.0c from Microsoft website http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details…;displaylang=en
Install Chipset Drivers (which you earlier downloaded and saved to a CD)
Install XP SP2 if it is not included in your XP installation CD
Install other peripheral device drivers (printer, scanner, etc)
Install JAVA RunTimeEnvironment : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
(you can download and save JRE offline installation to the same CD that you use for Chipset Drivers
Install your Application Software
Copy/Paste any documents, data, media and important files that you may want to have available on the machine.
That should make your machine good to go!
Best Regards
