Hey guys, my name is Zach and i've run into a bit of malware quite by accident and it won't relinquish it's hold on my computer. Seems i've gotten the same thing as the chap a couple posts before me, false window's warnings about hacking attempts and trying to get me to buy their software, an icon in my taskbar warning about virus activity and it switches my home page to "http://softwarereferral.com/jump.php?wmid=6010&mid=MjI6Ojg5&lid=2" Don't go there though, I think that's where I got this thing. But i didn't want to screw something up by doing what he did if I happen to have something different. So far i've searched and scanned and cleaned with: Spybot Search and Destroy, AVG Anti-Spyware, Smit fraud fix, ATF-Cleaner and Ad-Aware 2007, all fully updated, but they didn't get rid of the problem. I truely hope you guys can help me with this, its a real pain and i'd love to be rid of it.

Another development though, while I was waiting an internet explorer window popped up with the address set to "http://mediabusnetwork.com/phandler.php?sid=0&aid=0&said=0&pn=&pid=4" If you want i'll get another hackthis log.
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

To assist diagnosis I would like a list of installed programs.
  • Open HijackThis and select Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Select the Save List button
  • I suggest that you accept the default name of uninstall_list.txt and save the file to your desktop
  • Close HijackThis
Post back with the smitfraudfix log, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log
Hi, thanks for getting back to me and I'm sorry it took a while for me to respond. Anyways heres the Smitfraudfix log:

Cheers, and thanks for the help!
-On a side note I think it may be gone, there haven't been pop-ups or warnings and the homepage isn't being set to the Ultimate Defender site nor have there been random windows popping up. But i just want to be sure it isn't doing anything else.
You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Also, post a new HijackThis log

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
