I was online playing RuneScape when I noticed some script errors popping up. I exited the game to find that WinAntiSpyware was installing itself on my computer. I tried to remove as many files and registry entries as I could that referred to it as possible, but I am still getting loads of popups and browser hijackings. If I attempt to run AdAware, it will cause my PC to blue screen.

Below is my HJT log. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Hello Wotsamattu and welcome to the forums here at Tom Coyote.

I need you to rename Hijackthis because I suspect that you may have the Vundo infection that can hide some entries in your log.
  • Please go to the folder where you saved Hijackthis.exe:
  • Right-click on it, then select Rename.
  • Name it something like: FindVundo.exe (or whatever you want)
  • Then double-click the renamed HJT to scan and then post the new logfile.

Thanks Indi, here is the new log file. And BTW, I am getting a WinLogon error each time I reboot. I see something in the log that indicates a missing file.

Hi Wotsamattu,

And BTW, I am getting a WinLogon error each time I reboot. I see something in the log that indicates a missing file.

The missing file is many times incorrectly reported by HJT. Your error is likely caused by the infection and should stop once the fix is complete. Let me know if it doesn't.

As indicated by your renamed HJT log Vundo infection is very much present. So let's go...

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Hi Wotsamattu,

I would recommend you print these instructions out for reference during the fix as you will need to reboot during the fix.

Step 1:

We are going to use HJT to create a list of your currently installed programs.1. Open HijackThis and click on the Config... button in the "Other stuff" section (lower right hand corner).
2. Click on the Misc Tools button.
3. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
4. Click on the Save list... button.
5. Save the file uninstall_list.txt to a convinient location. This should open Notepad with the list.
6. Please Copy and Paste the list into your next reply.
Step 2:

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6E6D6EAE-D44A-AFED-1812-F88DBE2DD5ED} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\bazh.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7651B703-33B4-4740-993B-3177D859B517} - C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\hoqesifu83122.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9E9092A1-250B-405C-A852-0EF38D01CF1E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqq.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A4D15C9F-82F1-4ED7-9263-9834F422FE03} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DCD53738-C4F9-414A-A03C-C7405A4AC844} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcaxwv.dll
O18 - Protocol: Festoon - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O18 - Protocol: vskype - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddcaxwv - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ddcaxwv.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebcc - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll (file missing)

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Step 3:

1) Please download the Killbox.
Save it to the desktop and run it.

2) Select Delete on Reboot, and then click the All Files button. That button should now flash on and off with a green color.

3) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy)::

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bazh.dll
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\hoqesifu83122.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcaxwv.dll

4) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

5) Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

After rebooting, open up Killbox again. Click File -> Logs -> Actions History Log
Post this log in your next reply.

Step 4:

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\elpaajpA.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

http://www.kaspersky...anforvirus.html
http://www.virustota.../en/indexf.html

Step 5:

Trusted Zone removal:
Right click http://mvps.org/winh.../DelDomains.inf and select Save As to download WinHelp2002's DelDomains.inf.
Please save the file somewhere you can find it like on the desktop.
To run the inf file, right click on it and select Install.

So I need the Uninstall List, Killbox log, Jotti results from the file, and a new HJT log after you complete all the steps.

Thanks,
Dave

The latest log files you requested. Please note that the file C:\windows\system32\ddcaxwv.dll did not get deleted. Also, I now find another file called c:\windows\elpaajp.exe (without the A on the end) which shows up as infected.

Thanks

Dan

The latest log files you requested. Please note that the file C:\windows\system32\ddcaxwv.dll did not get deleted.

Yes, Vundo is still quite present here. Vundo can be very stubborn sometimes and can take a few passes at cleaning it up, but we'll get it.

Also, I now find another file called c:\windows\elpaajp.exe (without the A on the end) which shows up as infected.

Yes, that was the file I asked you to upload to Jotti. Is that the results from Jotti?

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

The help you receive here is free, but if you would like to help me continue the fight against Malware then Posted Image

Logs will be closed if you haven't replied within 5 days

Actually 2 files were present, the one you asked me to upload was elpaajpA.exe, and the second one that just appeared is elpaajp.exe (without the A on the end)

I am running the fix program as we speak.

Dave, Since performing the last steps, I don't appear to be seeing any signs of my browser being hijacked any more. However, I will give it some more time before I declare it fixed. (Unless there is something else you see that I should take care of.) I cannot thank you enough for all your help. I am sure you know how frustrated and angry it can make a computer user when this kind of stuff happens. You, and all the other people out in cyberspace who help complete strangers have my sincerest appreciation and thanks for doing what you do! Dan

Hi Dan, Glad to hear things are running better. Give me a little time to go through your combofix log...there's quite a bit to look at obviously. There may be some other "clean up" to do. I'll look at it with fresh eyes tomorrow. Regards, Dave

I ran the scan, AVG found a bunch of stuff. For whatever reason, the button to create a report was grayed out, so I am unable to post the AVG report here, but I have the HJT log. I am not getting the popups like I was before, so I am guardedly optimistic that my machine is OK now.
