I am having loads of problems with my WiFi. It is generally slow and often times out completely. I often have to reload a page a few times to actually finish loading the page. My wired connection seems fine, I clean out my system with adaware and spybot regularely and have a decent virus protection software. I have updated the driver for my wireless card. Any ideas? Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16473) Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG Driver Provider: Intel Driver Date: 04/04/2007 Driver Version: 9.0.4.36 Thanks in advance!
hello , i am Mike , have you checked you placement of your computer ??? some times where you sit might be the problem as in interfearence or finding the right hot spot then running a conection diagnostis scan to see if your ip address is correct , also could it be that some one is sharing you wireless ( piggy back) with out you knowing there are many factors to consider so you will have to include more info about your computer also have you submitted a HJT log to the maleware forum to see if you are truely not infected , the pro's the are better suited to really knowing !!!
Hi Mike, it may be placement issues, I will play around with that. my router is wpa encripted so probably not piggybacks? There is another laptop connected via WiFi to the same router that does not seem to have the same issues. Could it be issues with the two computers competing in some way? I have not yet submitted an HJT log as I did not want to cross post. Jesse
hey Jessie, try looking into your network connection in your control pannel and see if you have any other connetions that are connected , if you do , diable them and do a restart to see if this solves your prob. but make sure that you keep your wifi enabled , also if at all possible try shutting down you other laptop to see if this solves your prob !!!!! we will get this resolved Mike
Your wireless Router probably came with an installation CD. I find that most are basically worthless, except the feature to identify the local network, list the connected computers, and add a computer. What brand/model of Router are you using? Do you have the installation CD? Have you gone through the procedure for adding this Laptop? There should be absolutely no problem with the other computer "competing" as a problem. Afterall, starting at MAC address 02xxxxxxx, you can have up tp 256 computers connected wirelessly. And your present default address probably allows for a maximum of 50 machines. Best Regards
Hi Mike and Doug So I will try and see if there is any difference with the other network connections disabled. I have a Linksys Wireless G 2.4 Ghz I do have the installation cd, but yes it was useless so I configured it manually. So it is of course possible that I have set something wrong. Both laptops have no problem connecting wirelessly to the router. I usually have a good to excellent connection in regards to signal strength. I often get an error message from my browser (firefox) telling me that the connection was reset during loading. Also when this is occurring and I attempt to ping yahoo.com from a cmd prompt I usually only get one or two completed packets. Thanks guys Jesse
On the machine that is having erratic connection, perform the following:

Start - Run - (type)cmd
this will bring up a DOS Box display with a blinking cursor

At the blinking cursor type the following commands in sequence, waiting for the procedures to complete before entering the next command:

ipconfig /release - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"
ipconfig /renew - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"
ipconfig /flushDNS - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"

If the above does not remedy the problem, try this Next:
go here:
http://files.webattack.com/localdl834/WinsockxpFix.exe
Download Winsockxpfix.exe to your Desktop

Run Winsockxpfix.exe

For additional information about Winsockfix.exe you may read, here:

On the machine that is having erratic connection, perform the following:

ipconfig /release - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"
ipconfig /renew - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"
ipconfig /flushDNS - enter <– notice the required space before the "/"

I will try this. Is this basically the same as "repairing" a connection from right click option?
Jesse
hey jessie Mike here no this is a much better version !!!! normally this is a last resort for it will basically rebuild your compleat connection program !!! remember i said to not disable any connection that has to do with your wifi this includes any routers that are conneted for your wifi !!! ( do not deleat any of your connection ) also is your 1934 conncted this is the one that causes me the most problem!!!
Thanks guys, So far my WiFi now seems to be behaving. yes my 1394 conection was enabled as was my Lan, they are now both disabled and I have released/renewed/ and flushed. I will post again if it starts acting up. Do either of you know a good online learning resource for networking in general, I would love to build my skills. for example what is the purpose of the 1394 connection? Jesse
hey Jessie , Mike here, I am not really sure , but i do know that it is a windows based program that can be used for dial up , dsl and cable that works with a modem and some proxy connections ???? all it has ever done for me is caused me problems !!!! maybe one of the other techs here can enlighten us both ??? I have never really looked into it !!!!! glad your online now and staying connected !!!!! there are many sites that you can look up but be careful for some are just jokes that will just corrupt your system , i know this from expeirence, I myself woud not like to recommend one but maybe you can get one of the other techs to , or do a google search ,but be wary of progams that they offer !!!!!!!! do your research well !!! Mike
1394 conection <— refers to a type of connector plug and wire known as "FireWire"
Your machine is set up to accommodate 1394 connection (if you have a 1394 FireWire connector port)
Usually a Firewire connector would be an add-on Network Interface Card NIC with Firewire connector instead of Wireless or Ethernet cable (CAT5) Your machine may not have such a connector, and I can't think of any good reason why most people would have or want one. (used to be thought that FireWire was capable of higher speed transmissions.)

Many folk confuse USB for Firewire. <– They are entirely different, but used for similar purposes.

And many folks say WiFi when they could more accurately say Wireless Network Connection.

Thanks Doug! Never would of put that together, but of course makes perfect sense. I did know about firewire, Though I have never actually used Firewire. I take it to mean then that the 1394 connection has to be enabled to allow communication between your external firewire device and your computer? Jesse
