Apparently got a program (or two) "working in background". Went to task manager with no applications running. Checked processes, and found cpu usage monitor fluxuating like crazy. One process: rundll32.exe, floating and jumping all over the place. It will not let me end the process. I ended the process tree, but it didnt do anything. Also tried ending the process explorer.exe , then putting it back in, did nothing. After a while (after startup at least) it seems to settle down and goes back to normal. Occasionally it will start back up randomly though and screw everthing I was working on up. I ran a HijackthisScan. Did not know what to check, so I left alone. I saved it and is available if needed. Please let me know. I have a Compaq Presario notebook, with Windows XP. Here's hoping someone can help. Thanks in advance. Below is my HijackThisScan log:

hi Damare,

the good news is i dont see anything that looks like malware in the log.
rundll32.exe, and svchost.exe are both window core components and are used by other applications. of course this includes malware. have you recently installed any new software. alot of new computers come with useless stuff on them. look by your clock– if you see alot of icons check in preferences/options for it not to start with windows i dont see a antimalware app in the log. does that norton suite come with one? do you need one?
you might try a online scan for another opinion also:

F-secure scan:
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

click on the "start scanning button" near bottom of page.
click to accept/install the ActiveX applet,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes (may take awhile),the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.

Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a current HijackThis log.

Ok. thanks for helping. very appreciated. below is the scan from F-Secure:

I hope this helps. Apparently do have some spyware. Since the last HJS Ive gotten the new updated java and have deleted the old ones. All of this blinking of the cursor and such, starts from start up and then stops when I see that "AUTOPLAY" thing pop up in the upper left corner of my screen. It goes back and forth about 8 times and then everthing seems alright. I dont think this norton has a an antimalware app. Besides my norton subsription was only a 30 day trial, long since run out. Been going a year or more without virus protection. I dont have an isp address. I only hook up at work or at the library or wherever Im at. This is the first time Ive had any trouble.
hi Damare,

Apparently do have some spyware

log looks ok and online scan came up clean.

if norton is no longer updated i would remove it via add/remove programs panel. i think it shows the antivirus and a liveupdate seperatlely (both norton) in the add/remove programs panel. Do you want a free antivirus?

shelf life
"Result: 124 malware found" The Fsecure states, with only one disinfected. If Im clean, then what doe this mean? Im still having trouble, which seems to be increasing. Its not too bad when Im online, but when Im home (offline) trying to work on things, its very difficult. Something is definetly wrong somewhere. Should I try "System Restore"? How many of my files, downloads, could I lose? Should I make data copies of my important stuff just in case? Would those files reinfect my cpu once loaded? Free Anti-Virus? Sure, sounds good. I really do appreciate all the help. Im a little older, and still quite the novice at computers.
hi Damare,

f-secure didnt list what it was calling malware, could be minor stuff. i would relax, malware isnt always to blame for problems. dont use system restore yet. you wont lose any of your files or downloads. its always a good idea to make copies of important stuff, hard drives can fail.

here is a link for a norton product removal tool. it will uninstall norton products: or you could uninstall via add/remove programs panel, up to you

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

once norton is removed you can get free antivirus here:
AVG antivirus free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/29116/us/frt/0

i would download, install and update as soon as you can get a internet connection. follow the install wizard. since you dont have a isp at home you should check for updates whne you have a internet connection. antivirus needs to stay updated to cover the latest threats out there. the avg tray icon will let you know when its out of date. i would also do a system scan once its updated.

its always a good idea to have a malware scanner on your computer also. they are different than antivirus. they also need to be updated just like antivirus

so when you get the above antivirus (AVG) i would also download install and update a malware scanner since i dont see one in the hjt log.
you can pick >one< of these to get, up to you:

super antispyware:
http://www.superantispyware.com/

spybot search and destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

AVG Anti-spyware free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/29116/us/frt/0

download, install, update and do a system scan with one of them also.
—————————————————————————–
after the above, see if anything improves.

Well I did everything you said. Got the avg and superspyware, installed, scanned, etc. Spyware found 192 things and quarantined/removed them. I rebooted and…there it was again upon start up; the ever blinking sands of time thing going crazy still. Cpu usage going up and down eractically. Gotta have some program running in the background. I dont know what it could be. Its very frustrating. Any other suggestions? Also when I uninstalled Norton, I still have the Live Update folder and some Symantec files/folders. Should I delete all of those as well? Again thanks for all the help. I will not be online again until early monday morning, so Ill chat with you then to see what else I can do.
hi, you can delete the left over norton folders. the good news is the problem must not be malware related with all the scans you have done. have you installed any new software lately?post a new hjt log and do this also: start hjt, click on "open misc tools section" click on open process manager click the small clipboard icon open notepad (start>program>accessories>notepad)right click and select paste to copy the items form hjt. call it something, save it and post results in next reply. also: start hjt, click on open misc tools section click on open uninstall manager then save list save the list somewhere and post that list in next reply also. we will attempt to see what might be chewing up cpu cycles if we can. shelf life
Well there's been a new development over the weekend. After some experimenting, I noticed when I turned cpu on, the blinkings and slowdown and such would always be there. When I opened the cd-rom tray, everything would go back to normal. No blinking, processes stable, and cpu usage down and also stable. Then I would put the tray back in, everthing would go haywire again. Eject, and the problems would stop. There's no cd in the tray but when I would snap it back in, the spinning cd icon would come on screen as if a cd was in there. Pretty weird. All weekend I kept the cd tray open so I could work. A temp solution for sure. I hope you can give me a permanent one. I still did what you said though, and below are the logs: Process list saved on 3:07:26 AM, on 7/23/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) [pid] [full path to filename] [file version] hi Damare, i was really looking for unneeded software to get rid of. it seems you have found the reason: the cd drive. not malware after all. maybe your cd drive is on its last leg? it must be trying to "read" a cd when you close the tray. you could look in device manager. right click my computer icon on desktop> select properties>hardware tab>device manager, click + sign. see if there is yellow exclamation point which could mean there is a problem. other than that not sure, cd drives are more mechanical devices than anything else. maybe the optics need cleaning? i think there are cleaning kits for drives but i dont know how effective they are. they are also very inexpensive and easy to change out. shelf life
Well no exclamation point. It also says "This device is working properly". Maybe Ill try getting one of those cleaning kits. It shouldnt be on its last leg. Its just over a year old. Thanks again.
