I ran Spybot yesterday and it detected Smitfraud-c., which I understand is a trojan. Spybot appears to have removed it (I rebooted and ran Spybot again and it did not detect). I have read that this is not removable with Spybot however. On the otherhand, my computer does not appear to be experiencing any particular symptoms (nothing has been changed, such as my background or IE toolbars). I am wondering if it is safe to assume my computer is not infected? (I have also run McAfee virus scanner, Windows Live OneCare scanner, Ad-Aware and SuperAntispyware, none of which really picked up anything seemingly related to Smitfraud-C. or other viruses/trojans (just some tracking cookies or privacy items which the spyware programs apparently removed.) Also, is it safe to re-format computer if there possibly is a trojan on it (I assume reformatting would clean anything up–I am considering reformatting anyway). Thanks.
My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.
In answer to your question, there is a very good chance that there may have been just a couple of Smitfraud files and they were easily removed by the programs you used. If you format your drive and do a reinstall of the operating system, as you mentioned, there is nothing left from Smitfraud. Everything would be wiped clean.
I hope this answers your questions to your satisfaction.
