My husband clicked on something, he doesn't remember what, on our home computer on Friday night. Since then I have discovered that Internet Explorer does not come up as it should. Instead we are redirected to softwarereferral.com and then to Ultimate Defender. Then the pop-ups for safewebnavigate, SecurePCCleaner, and Windows Security Alerts begin. One of the warning boxes tells me that we have Trojan.W32.Looksky and by clicking I can download something that will clean it out. So far, Firefox, our default browser, has not had these problems.

A SpyBot Search and Destroy scan showed three Smitfraud variants, a Deep Dive, besides adware that seems to come up quite often whenever I run Adaware and Spybot. All but one of the Smitfraud variants was cleaned; SpyBot suggested rebooting and letting SpyBot run on restart to clean the last one. I did what was suggested but I Explorer is still being hijacked and we are still getting popups.

I would sure appreciate your help to get rid of the pests and clean up our computer. I home school with Minnesota Virtual Academy and we need this computer for some of the girls' schoolwork. (They have two school-issued computers and all three computers are on one DSL router.) I hope there is not risk of the school computers being infected. Thank you ahead of time for any wisdom you can give me on this problem.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sorry about the delay in responding :( If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello. Please don't be sorry that you couldn't get to my post until now. From the looks of this part of the board, you all have had your hands full.

Describing how my computer is behaving at the present:

When I first log on, everything seems fine. The desktop displays like it should; nothing seems amiss.

I go to Outlook Express to check my email. Several things happen.
1. Windows Security Alert box pops up with the message "Windows has detected an Internet attack attempt . . . Click here to download spyware for total protection." I click the 'x' in the corner to get rid of the box.
2. Safewebnavigate comes up, then switches to a "Your PrivacyGuard" box which asks me to click 'OK'. I click the 'x' to remove the box. yourprivacyguard.com comes up as a full screen along with another Windows Security Alert box. I click the 'x' in the corner of both.
3. Safewebnavigate comes up immediately along with a security box asking if I wish to install YourPrivacyGuard.
4. If I take any time to make notes on the computer behavior all Cain breaks out. A flashing red hexagon with a white 'x' appears in the tool bar at the lower right hand corner of the screen. A half screen Ultimate Defender page appears within a second.
5.Another YourPrivacyGuard security box appears along with a yellow System Alert box above the tool bar in the lower right corner of the screen.
6.Another Yourprivacyguard.com full screen appears. A Security Alert box comes up with a note that Trojan.W32.Looksky has been detected. I click 'no' to the request and 'x' the privacyguard screen.
7.The computer is very slow even when I use the Firefox browser. Scrolling up or down to read emails is very difficult. It seems as if with my every command, whether scrolling or opening a document with AdobeReader or editing photos with my photo software, the computer has to wade through a bunch of hidden commands before it can respond to my command.
8. As soon as I click out of Outlook Express a yellow System Alert box pops up. When I don't respond, it fades and the same Trojan warning as in #6 appears. I click 'no' to the prompt and the System Alert box reappears.
9. When I try to get to the Internet Explorer (MSN) home page, I am redirected to a green full screen with software referral.com as a partial address. This switches to a full screen for Ultimate Defender. I 'x' it all out.
10. The Windows Security Alert box comes up which I 'x' out. PCSecureSystem appears on a full screen page with the header "WARNING You must protect your computer". Enough of Internet Explorer. I exit.
11. I go to Firefox, the browser we most use on this computer, our default browser. A Windows Security Alert box pops up. I get rid of it.

When I navigate Firefox, the toolbar area at the bottom of the screen will go completely black and stay like that for two or three seconds. This happens often, and if I am typing something, what I have typed does not come up on the screen until after the toolbar is totally restored. If I am listening to a music CD or doing anything, when the toolbar goes black, it is as if the computer does a stop action, then returns to what it was doing as soon as the toolbar is restored. While I use Firefox sometimes a 'Page Cannot Be Found' for Internet Explorer appears in the toolbar.

I ran another SpyBot S&D check last night before going to bed. I found the usual adware like AdRevolver, Casalmedia, and MediaBurst. Deep Dive was back along with Smitfraud-C and Smitfraud (that has an alphabet soup of four letters after its name). My husband thinks he remembers allowing an Active X Object to load to be able to watch something on the night all of this began to occur.

c:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Running the Clean

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

[external image: Posted Image]

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Your may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.
I got the computer into Safe Mode without trouble. The only two accounts shown on Safe Mode (Administrator and my husband's) do not display the SmitfraudFix Folder on the desktop. The AVG shortcut is there, not the SmitfraudFix Folder. My account is the one that everyone uses when they are on this computer and evidentally my account is not the Administrator account. The SmitfraudFix folder is displayed on my account desktop when the computer is not in Safe Mode. I can not access my account when the computer is in Safe Mode. What should I do?
I'm afraid I made a couple of mistakes when I was trying to following directions. I read your instruction to just go ahead in Normal Mode after I had placed the SmitFraud Fix file in Shared Documents so that it would display on my husband's account. I ran it that way but failed to get the log report. I fumbled something with the AVG in Safe Mode and lost the log file. I know that there were 596 infected objects found and fixed by AVG. Selecting "Apply all actions" before saving the report seems to have eliminated the report both times I ran AVG. Anyway, I reran SmitFraud Fix tonight and this time saved the log file. I also have a HJT file I will be sending. After running AVG and SmitFraud Fix, I am now able to get into my Outlook Express and Internet Explorer without a single popup appearing. Just a little Cleanup

With AVG Anti-Spyware, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All then Remove Finally

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
My computer is running quicker which I suppose is to be expected when it is cleaned of all that junk.

When I rebooted I got a message box "Found New Hardware" and then the Found New Hardware Installation box that says in part "This wizard helps you install software for Unknown." This came up once yesterday also. Is this regarding the installation of AVG, Smitfraud Fix, or ATF Cleaner? I clicked on the cancel button since I didn't know for sure. If it comes up again, what should I do?

I also did not get a prompt with running ATF Cleaner that asked if I wanted to keep saved passwords in the Firefox browser. I have most of them handy, though, so I can get back in to my password sites fairly easily.

Here is my new Hijack This log:

When I rebooted I got a message box "Found New Hardware" and then the Found New Hardware Installation box that says in part "This wizard helps you install software for Unknown."

That would be something like a hardware device: printer / scanner / monitor, etc. a hardware device.

You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.
